We were lucky to catch up with Nikki L’Esperance recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
Self-discipline is something I’ve been working with for many years. I’m sure it’s similar for all of us; some things are really easy to commit to… and others, not so much. My clients and business are areas that I have no problem committing too, but movement and eating well? That was more difficult. Over the past few years, I have dove deep into growth, self-care and becoming the woman I desire to be and show up as. It started with changing beliefs, triggers and allowing myself to go deep. The inner work is easy for me, I love it. I did a lot of coaching, counseling, bodywork and more. I still was having a hard time committing to exercise, but I decided to trust the process. As I did the deep work, I could feel myself changing. I was doing work on me, my worth, my value and really loving me for me-not how productive I was. I started to believe I am valuable and I deserve to receive just as much as my clients do. This changed everything. When I believe I am worth showing up for and worth feeling great, I eat better, move more and it’s easy! I’m not battling myself or trying to stay away from temptations, because it doesn’t feel tempting. I also give myself grace when I don’t hit the mark I’m aiming for, and start over the next day. This new way of being feels so much better and not so harsh. It feels GOOD to live in this way and I can stick to my habits so much better.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been a Massage Therapist for about 10 years. When I first graduated, I worked on a lot of people who had been in car accidents and fell in love with helping those who struggle with pain and tension. I love seeing people be able to take on life differently when they don’t have pain debilitating them. I started my own business with it, with the goal of taking 10 clients/ week. It exploded, and I started to grow. My studio now has 5 Massage Therapists with a lot of holistic self-care products and gifts. Each action has led to the next and it continues to grow and expand. You can find all of our products online at www.encompasstm.com- we have our own line and recently launched non-toxic perfumes! Customer favorites include our Happy Skin Creme and The Balance Serum.
I use a technique called Trigger Point Therapy, that has helped a lot of my clients with their pain- when they didn’t even realize massage could help with pain or tension. A lot of people in my area didn’t know what it was, so I started to educate. As I educated more and more, I could see a big gap in my area of those who knew, confidently, how to work pain and tension, and those who didn’t. The more I saw it, the more I needed to do something about it, so I opened a Massage School to teach about how to help those with pain, from the beginning. It has been an extraordinary journey, and I love teaching a lot. I continue to trust God and go where He leads me as I travel on this journey of life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities that I have that were really impactful on my journey include creativity, passion, and being willing to grow and change. If you are just starting on your journey as an entrepreneur, I would highly recommend following your intuition and chasing your dreams, but doing it with a lose hand, and without set expectations. Allow yourself to change if something isn’t working, allow money to flow from places you may not have expected, allow God to show up and make things work when you can’t see a solution to a problem, get creative with solutions as well. There is no one right way to do it, it gets to be your journey, but if you’re dead set on doing it one way, it might be a lot harder than if you allow it to unfold unconventionally.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I think it is always great to stay in your “zone of genius” as much as possible. If you can afford to hire out things that you aren’t good at, it will save you time and money. Being supported as a business owner is crucial, so that you can make more money by doing the thing that you are great at. Sometimes, you do need to be creative and do things on your own, but if something just isn’t working (social media for me), then hire it out! You will be less stressed, happy with the results and be able to do the thing that you excel at.
