Meet Derek Brown

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derek Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Derek , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
My creativity attempts to die daily. Heck, it almost feels suicidal at times. It’s like every time I look around there is something attempting to stifle me. At the same time, the challenge of overcoming those feelings, coupled with knowing that if I don’t continue I will fail is what keeps me going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have branded myself as “The Carmedian…The King of Sitdown Comedy.” The reason I have given myself this title is that most of the content I am creating for my platforms happens in the car. Yep, that’s right, I am a rideshare driver. Seriously though, the best part of being a driver is I get a new audience every few minutes to test out new content. I also get paid for it, so there’s that. I have even created a series on my Youtube channel called “Between the Trips” and I have almost 80 videos to date.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that were most impactful on my journey were my ability to be fearless when speaking in front of people, being honest and sincere in my in the delivery of my content, and genuinely caring about how my work is received.

To the people that are just getting started, I would recommend that they just be themselves. Don’t attempt to emulate others that are in the field they are entering. Definitely do your research, but find your own voice because when you go the route that is not for you, the journey will be far more tumultuous. Don’t make it more challenging than it already will be and the rewards for staying true to yourself are plentiful!

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge that I am facing as with most rising creatives is visibility. It doesn’t matter how gifted you are in any area, if no one sees your work, it feels defeating. There is nothing worse than putting your all into a project, sharing it with the world, and receiving little to no feedback. I mean you want to know if what your doing is worth it, right?

Well, the above scenario has plagued me for years. To resolve it, I now post what I like and I have increased the frequency of sharing as well. I was always told “consistency is the key” and they were correct. As a result of making those slight changes, I have seen an increase in my followers and fans by the thousands across my most frequently used platforms. If you force enough pressure down the clogged drain, you will eventually remove the blockage.
