Meet Kiya Ricks

We recently connected with Kiya Ricks and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiya, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Honestly, if you know you’re the sh**, you wake up everyday with an over all goal in mind and you don’t let anything stop you. Whether it be weight loss, sales, work place, etc, you honestly have to persist. This world is full of nay sayers, and haters for days! It doesn’t matter what anyone says negatively about you, it’s about knowing how to take that negative and turn it into a positive and keep it pushing.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Since I was a kid I’ve always been independent and driven to do whatever I set my mind to. If it was difficult I wouldn’t stop until I figured it out. I taught myself to use computers, to drive, how to speak in interviews; As I got older, I was blessed with so many skills, I wanted to make sure I used every last one in whatever way I could to create and continue to walk the path to my purpose. This year it’s time, and I have so much geared up and ready to share with the world. For my hair business, my music journey, my writing, building my relationship with God, and even for myself personally.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that I had to make sure I had was self discipline, financial discipline, & accountability. The parts of other artists journeys that a lot of them don’t talk about is the development and the process of creating, getting your body and your mind right, isolating for focus, finding and maintaining your peace. In order to be successful or even to find your path you have to get yourself and your mind right. Otherwise it’ll only be things clouding your vision or blocking it altogether.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I plan and I make sure I’m taking the time I need for self care so that I can work and think clearly. When you have a lot on your plate at one time you tend think you can handle it all. Don’t get me wrong even I sometimes like to work under pressure, but always doing it causes stress and lack of motivation, and confidence. This stunting our growth as a creator overall.
