We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julianne Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julianne below.
Julianne , sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
The relationship with my mental health is a rollercoaster. I have struggled with depression and anxiety since I was a kid. With the experiences I’ve endured in my lifetime, I’d definitely say I am still persisting. It’s super important to surround yourself with people who have your best interest at heart and can provide a safe space for you to be vulnerable with them. Opening up about my struggles has never come easy, even to those I’m closest to, so I always try and remind myself that people do care and do want to help. Even though the loneliness can over power a lot of those other emotions you feel, taking that one step to be vulnerable and seek guidance can go so far.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a makeup artist and business owner of my brand JT Beauty Studios. JTB is a travel only makeup artistry company who provides luxury beauty services for all. This includes those of any culture, race, gender or non-conforming, or sexual orientation. The goal for my business is to provide high quality services for EVERYONE in the comforts of their own environment. Being bi-racial, my experience in the cosmetology industry has been very divided in the means of a target audience. While there may be some inclusitivity , it’s minimal. I want my audience to see my work and know that I can cater to each and every client, and they can feel comfortable while doing so. I have been in the industry for 7 years and in March 2024 I will be celebrating my first official year as a self-owned business!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being your own boss is no walk in the park. I highly encourage beginning your journey with a team/business. It’s important you learn the ins and outs of the service industry with a team to understand each sector and its importance, especially if you’re looking into working for yourself. There’s many acquired skills necessary to be a successful self-owned business, some being which you may learn along the way. My top 3 would be: discipline, work ethic, and passion. Without these 3 as a priority, sustaining a business on your own will be a challenge. The best way to grow in these areas starts with building your community. Surround yourself with like minded individuals, those who are in similar industries that you can shadow under and learn from. Building relationships with professionals in your industry could lead to mentorship, referrals, opportunities, and so much more. As nerve racking as it may to put yourself out there, it’s so worth it!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I am coming up one my first official year of business! Looking back on this past year, I’ve learned resilience. With working for yourself, there is no management/HR/ or business you can fall back on, but your own. It teaches you a lot about strength and being able to push through adversity.
