Meet Adriana Colina

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adriana Colina . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adriana below.

Adriana , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Growing up I was always that one weird kid in the class that didn’t have many friends, did horribly in school and kind of just an oddball overall. Seeing that I never fit in anywhere, and how much I struggled in school due to learning disabilities (ADHD & Dyslexia). It made me think that I never would accomplish anything or achieve big goals like my peers.

This wasn’t until later in my adolescence that I came to realize that these unique weird things about me are what actually help me stand out in a beneficial way.

My extreme vivid imagination and meeting the right people in life, made me follow a career in filmmaking. I always found myself with a camera in my hands. From a young age going to Walmart, buying disposable cameras and getting my photos developed. From taking classes in school that let me explore this avenue in a whole new light. To connecting the dots of how to make a career from this.

From taking my unique sense of style, hobbies, and interest and turning them into a career and future for myself.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Adriana I moved to the Kansas City area from my hometown Quito Ecuador when I was 16 years old.

In my time from being here I have developed my love and passion for filmmaking into turning it into a career.

I’ve been a freelance filmmaker in the Kansas City area for about 2 years now working on a variety of projects ranging from music videos, commercials, and narrative films. Working professionally both in the camera department and set design department.

I’m very fortunate to have turned my passion into a career path for myself or I can express my artistic image in many shapes and forms.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think one of the big things about getting into my field was how passionate I felt about it so that was the mindset that I had going into it.

Without the passion for it I don’t think I would have the drive and excitement to pursue it. This is something that I’ve always wanted so I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I get a chance to work on a production.

One of my strongest boots on set is my positivity. Everyday I feel so lucky to have the life that I have and work in the career job that I’ve always wanted that it’s not hard to be as happy for everything that I have around me.

In one of the biggest things I’ve gained from working in this field and just growing up honestly, is confidence. It took me a long time to have the confidence that I have in myself to do the work that I do. I feel like I always had a vision or I or some sort of talent that I could share and express but it wasn’t until later that I developed the confidence to fully emerge into this field.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
One of the biggest things I’ve learned this year is to have faith in myself. I think something that maybe most in my field struggle with as well as impostor syndrome. And I’m not going to lie that this isn’t something that I still somewhat struggle with to this day but in the past 12 months I have been able to really accept the person that I’ve become and have the confidence in who I am and every day I work on that confidence building.
