We were lucky to catch up with Jana Orr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jana, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I unearthed my purpose during my tenure as an infant teacher. Recognizing a profound calling,I knew I ascertained a more impactful purpose—dedicated to aiding mothers in securing the rest and care they rightfully deserve while simultaneously providing nurturing care to infants.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a birth doula, we dedicated to providing continuous emotional and physical support throughout the birth journey. Whether it is a hospital birth, home birth, or cesarean section, we will be by our client’s side every step of the way. Our goal is to help moms feel informed, confident, and empowered during this special time.
As a postpartum doula, we support families during the transformative and joyous time after the arrival of their baby. Our goal is to provide them with the emotional and physical support they need to thrive in their new role as a parent.
We will be launching childbirth classes soon as well as some products.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. **Empathy and Compassion:** Understanding and connecting with the emotional needs of new parents is crucial. Empathy creates a supportive environment, and compassion helps build trust during a vulnerable period.
2. **In-Depth Knowledge of Postpartum Care:** A solid understanding of postpartum physical and emotional recovery, breastfeeding, infant care, and potential challenges allows a doula to provide valuable guidance and support tailored to each family’s unique situation.
3. **Effective Communication and Active Listening:** Clear communication helps in establishing expectations and addressing concerns. Active listening allows the doula to truly understand the family’s needs, fostering a strong and trusting relationship.
These qualities, skills, and knowledge areas contribute to a doula’s ability to provide meaningful support during the postpartum period.
For those at the early stages of their doula journey, my advice would be to prioritize ongoing education and training. Stay informed about the latest evidence-based practices in maternal and newborn care. Build a strong foundation in effective communication and active listening, as these skills are crucial in providing emotional support. Seek mentorship from experienced doulas to gain insights into different birthing experiences. Lastly, cultivate empathy and cultural competence to better serve diverse families.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
