Meet Char Norman

We recently connected with Char Norman and have shared our conversation below.

Char, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I am deeply ingrained in the environment, in fact I spend a great deal of time hiking and walking in nature. Keen observation of the natural world has led to a desire to educate others to its mysteries and work toward environmental protection. My skills as an artist and the absolute need to create is essentially the driving force behind my desire to educate and bring awareness to what is around us. I’ve worked as an artist for many years but it was not until mid-career when I realized a method to marry my work with my outdoor activities. Now when I find or see intriguing bits of flora or fauna, ideas for incorporating them into my sculpture drive me to create.

In addition, I have worked in an academic setting for years. Teaching and education are a part of who I am and drive what I see as the purpose of my art.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am very focused on an artistic career, and in particular creating work for galleries and creative venues. The excitement and love of what I do begins in the studio. There is an innate need to create- not just the making of new elements but putting things together in unusual ways. I’m a weaver and papermaker so this involves a lot of slow work to develop a piece. Finding just the right materials and engineering a finished piece is so satisfying, especially as it is nearing completion. Installing a show and finally seeing the work in a professional setting is equally exciting. Interaction with viewers is the final piece of the puzzle and brings a new perspective to my work which can then be carried into the next body of work.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and foremost is proficiency in the chosen media. Quality work requires skills. Second, I think it is important to develop concepts to drive the work.
Business skills are the third leg of the stool for me. The ability to write well, keep records, and market the work.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents provided me with myriad opportunities to hike, camp, and fall in love with nature. They supported me in my choice of colleges, major, and careers. Both took me seriously as and artist. In addition, my mother was a CPA and taught me business skills, while my father taught me time management and multi-tasking which is a huge part of how I continue to work.
