We recently connected with Nyi Mulan and have shared our conversation below.
Nyi , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I Love when I’m asked this question because it was not easy coming for me. I Found My purpose or passion as I like to say by diving back into my roots and allowing my inner child to come forth. The Moment I sat back and listened to the voice of younger Janiayh , Nyi Mulan was created. From a child , My mother would describe me as creative and artistic. For Christmas she always stimulated my brain with gifts of craft sets , puzzles and what shaped me most .. My Barbie Dolls. My love for fashion , styling and creating a visual story started in my childhood room with my Barbie dolls, endless amounts of wardrobe and the ultimate Barbie dream house. In my line of work today , I love to envision my models as my own human Barbie dolls. I get the opportunity to dress them , pose them , create their sets and essentially their story through a series of photos. Creating These Photos , These Stories , This Joy For My Clients is My Purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Well For Starters , My Name is Nyi Mulan. A Creative Director, A Visual Story Teller , Visionary and Part Time Free Lance Model. I Debuted my creative direction career in 2022 but my love for creating art began at home. My mother wanted all her children successful but she always reminded my brothers and I to not follow an average way of living. She kept me in performance arts schools, private schools , etc ; Just to expand our horizons to more. As an adult now I thank her because this shaped me early and young to find love in art , the world around us , change & so much more. In 2024 , I’m most excited to now showcase my other talents through my Creative Direction such as my graphic designing , event planning & prop creation. What’s so special about being a Creative Director to me is the freedom for my passion to grow and change. When I’m on set I’m always learning something new from the model , photoghapher, designer etc and with that knowledge I’m given an opportunity to build on it , practice some more and acquire a new skill set.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me , the areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey was learning that Having a team to lean back on and learn from will benefit you way more than trying to do anything alone. I’m an Aquarius and as most people know , we often thrive in being alone. However my line of work has taught me that with a team and a flow of different ideas can create more magic than what I can do by myself , having the support from my friends , family and clients has pushed me further and helped me back up when this career kicked me down.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
An Ideal Client to me is honestly all my go to clients. These woman take direction very well , allow me creative freedom on set to change and or add anything I need to create the perfect vision.
