Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Whitney Gambrah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Whitney, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I find my purpose in Christ. My relationship with God has shaped who I am in every area of my life. I have a brand called Swanzy. Swanzy encourages people to live notably in their God given purpose. Also, I find purpose from my passions. Ever since I was a child, I’ve been passionate about fashion, justice reform, helping orphans, and education.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Whitney Gambrah. I’m the founder and CEO of a small business, Swanzy. I’m Ghanaian, but born in Virginia. I’m a first-generation oldest daughter. So, if you know anything about being the eldest daughter in a foreign household you know that it comes with a lot of responsibility. I started the brand Swanzy in commemoration of my late father, Paul Swanzy. I wanted people to be encouraged to step out and chase your purpose despite your background. “The ones who get there,” represent people who strive to reach their destination, step outside the box, break barriers, and illuminate the path they embark on. Swanzy focuses on creating merchandise, mainly sweatsuits that are comfortable, quality, and stylish!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. God’s hand is in everything. If you allow yourself to see Him, He’s there. God has given me ideas, designs, business strategies, names, etc. You truly don’t have to embark on your creative journey. 2. Being fluid and teachable is essential. Running a business is not linear. It’s important to take your L’s and learn how to pivot to make more W’s.
3.Teamwork truly makes the dream work. Delegation is key. It may seem like when you’re first starting your business that you have to do everything alone, but lean on your support system.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Our Creative Director, Jude, has been pivotal in the growth of Swanzy. He’s so talented and insightful. He’s the creative genius behind our designs! He’s extremely knowledgeable about the fashion industry. He truly inspires me. He pours into me, especially in moments where I feel stagnant or want to give up. He shows me what consistency and dedication looks like. Honestly, without him and God there would be no Swanzy.
