Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophia Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sophia , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Believe it or not, I still struggle with Imposter Syndrome. I honestly don’t believe it’s necessarily a negative phenomenon that many people view it to be, but rather can have positive implications for both personal and professional development.
One of the primary reasons why imposter syndrome helps me in my professional life is that it allows me to have a high level of self-awareness and introspection, and therefore helps me to reflect on my actions and abilities so that I can strive to achieve a higher standard in my work. The healthy level of self-doubt pushes me to work harder, foster humility, seek continuous learning opportunities, and take on new challenges. I believe by embracing imposter syndrome in a positive light through the drive to prove myself, has promoted my professional growth, benefiting both myself and my workplace.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an aesthetic nurse practitioner, my primary role is to provide specialized care and treatments to individuals seeking aesthetic enhancements. I have acquired in-depth knowledge and expertise in cosmetic procedures, including injectables with neuromodulators, dermal fillers, laser treatments, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques.
I am fervent about staying at the forefront of industry advancements. This allows me to offer the latest and most effective treatments to my patients. Constantly learning about emerging technologies and techniques not only ensures my patients receive the highest quality of care but also keeps me engaged and excited about my profession.
What I love most about my job is the opportunity to witness the positive impact I can make on my patients’ lives. Through my expertise and personalized approach, I am able to help individuals achieve their aesthetic goals and enhance their self-confidence.
I consider myself truly blessed to be able to work in an industry that brings me so much joy. For me, it is not simply a job, but rather a true passion that fuels my enthusiasm and drive.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities are as follows (in no particular order):
1. In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology: To be successful in medical aesthetics, it is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the human anatomy and how various procedures and treatments can affect it. This includes understanding the structure and function of various facial and body features, as well as how they change with age or due to certain conditions. This knowledge will help in accurately identifying suitable treatment options, ensuring proper placement of injections, and minimizing potential risks or complications.
2. Aesthetic sensibility: Having a keen eye for aesthetics is a valuable quality in this field. This involves having a strong sense of proportion, symmetry, and balance in order to achieve natural-looking results. Being able to assess a patient’s facial features or body contours and recommend appropriate treatments requires an understanding of beauty standards and the ability to tailor treatments to individual needs.
3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills: Building positive relationships with patients, colleagues, and other professionals in the field is vital to success in aesthetic medicine. Being able to effectively communicate with patients, understand their desires, and manage their expectations is crucial in delivering a positive patient experience. Collaborating and networking with other professionals can also open up opportunities for knowledge exchange and professional growth.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell had a profound impact on my personal development, shaping the way I perceive success and inspiring me to approach life with a new perspective.
One of the most valuable takeaways I gained from “Outliers” is the concept of the “10,000-Hour Rule.” Gladwell argues that it takes approximately 10,000 hours of dedicated practice in mastering a skill. This idea transformed my understanding of success, emphasizing that it is not solely attributed to natural talent or intelligence but is a result of hard work, determination, and relentless practice.
Another significant insight I gained from the book was the idea of cultural legacy. Gladwell emphasizes that success is also influenced by factors beyond an individual’s control, such as their cultural background, heritage, and upbringing and how this can shape an individual’s opportunities and mindset. This notion resonated with me, as it made me reflect on my own cultural background and the unique advantages and challenges that come with it. Understanding the significance of cultural legacy allowed me to appreciate and leverage my heritage as a source of strength and resilience.
The final takeaway is the significance of seizing opportunities. “Outliers” introduced me to the concept of meaningful work and the value of seizing opportunities. Gladwell argues that timing and circumstance play pivotal roles in success. This idea made me aware of the importance of being prepared to seize favorable circumstances when they arise. It encouraged me to always stay curious, proactive, and ready to embrace new possibilities.
I am grateful for the lessons learned from this book to my own life and continue to apply them in various aspects of my life, striving to be an outlier in my own unique way.
