Meet Eva Nomikou

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eva Nomikou. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Eva, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My friends and family. I get my resilience from them, but I think mostly my mom. My mom always has the right thing to say and make you look at the bright side of things and feel better. It’s difficult to adapt to challenging life experiences, especially when so far from home and having a good support system is very important. When I was younger, I was scared of being alone away from home, I didn’t like going to summer camps for that reason. Then suddenly I got accepted to study what I loved, on the other side of the world. When I first moved to the US, It was really difficult for me. Being by myself in New York – a really scary city- doing musical theatre -in the capital of musical theatre- for the first month or so, I was so stressed and scared that I literally couldn’t eat. Time always makes things better, but if it wasn’t for the support and motivation of my family and friends (even through the phone) I probably would have moved back to Greece.
And after a while, using that as a base/ as an example I learned how to support and motivate myself.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I grew up in Athens, Greece where I started playing piano, dancing and singing when I was 5 years old. While in school I joined bands and we played bars and venues all over Greece. In addition to that, I was lucky enough to be cast in some amazing musical theatre productions in Athens’ biggest theaters. After graduating high school I moved to New York to study musical theatre and then decided to get my BFA at AMDA College of the Arts, in Los Angeles. When in LA, I started performing in venues and writing music for the first time. I met producers and started recording originals and covers. I joined the Mystic Braves, and went on tour with them in the US and in Europe. In addition to that, I started singing background vocals for Erini Nomikos and Jules Duke. Now, I am in the process of releasing more songs with a new band called TooManyMichaels.

There’s a Spotify link underneath where you can hear the covers I released and another one with some originals/ background vocals I’ve recorded

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Something that in my opinion has been very impactful in my journey is my ability to improvise. Sometimes things go wrong when you’re on stage and improvising is the only way to be safe. Playing weekly live music shows is not the same as being in a musical play. There’s no script and you need to be able to go with the flow.

Another skill that I believe has been impactful in my musical journey is having a trained ear, which has helped me with a few things. For example, I can figure out the basics to most musical instruments or if I hear a song I can easily figure it out on piano, guitar or bass. In addition to that it has enhanced my ability to make up harmonies for any melody. This has been very helpful and important when recording, but also for live shows and has opened many doors in my career.

In addition to that I think that having a lot of different musical influences has been very important to my journey. Growing up in Greece I have influences that have shared my technique, tone, rhythm perception and generally my approach to music.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for new people to collaborate with. I love discovering new artists, producers, music styles, and different approaches. I really enjoy seeing how other people work and learn from them. I don’t really have limits when it comes to jamming or collaborative studio sessions and anyone who would like to collaborate can find me on instagram or send me an email.
