We were lucky to catch up with Marin Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Marin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I attribute it to growing up in a farming family. I am originally from Kansas and we were active in 4-H so there was always something to do, something to take care of and something to work on. I’m also grateful social media and technology weren’t as prominent because it allowed us to play, be imaginative and experience the rewards from practicing and hard work.
I was also a dancer so we had discipline to improve our skills for the betterment of ourselves and the team relying on us.
As an Active Duty Military Spouse, business owner and mom I have had to quickly make decisions, delegate the most important tasks and learn what to say no to. The motivating factors for a strong work ethic have moved from extrinsic to intrinsic. I love having something to challenge my creativity and professionalism on a daily basis.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Local Collaborative is a Branding + Marketing agency owned and founded by an Active Duty Military Spouse. We focus on hiring fellow military spouses, work-from-home-parents and work with all industries across the United States.
We pair simple, creative approaches with strong, clear communication strategies to provide small businesses with the marketing they need to succeed. Since being a military spouse requires constant moving and adaptation, I had a dream to collaborate with talented professionals I’ve worked with during my years in the advertising and marketing industry.
Our team collaborates with you to create a memorable brand people will fall in love with. We offer executive level results with a hometown experience because we don’t believe things need to be extravagant to make an impact. We love seeing the relief small business owners have after we take the stress and overwhelm of social media marketing off their overflowing plate. It’s time to get you back to working on what makes you happy!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe resilience, communication and the knowledge of being a business owner myself were the most impactful in the success of our business journey.
If someone is just starting out, no matter the industry, understand you will hear No more than Yes. Congrats! You’re closer to your next yes. Being able to adapt and, even if things aren’t going the way you’d like or had pictured, adjust the sails and lean into a new direction.
Strong communication skills set up the expectation for a client on what to expect, the upcoming process and any follow-up to come. We have learned to be confident even if that means extending a deadline, discussing budgets, or staying top-of-mind so they know you’re still active and able to help. You will be the go-to referral even after your transaction is finished.
Use your experiences as a customer and a start-up business owner to understand their pain points and best help your client-they may not even know what they want to ask for!
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Time. And I’m sure that one-word sentence hit a chord with numerous people.
I started Local Collaborative before becoming a mom but I knew I wanted to have kids in the future. Our life required my flexibility and I knew I would be the primary parent; going solo a majority of the time. Deployments, moves, trainings, business and life demands.… have always known that I wanted to prioritize being a mom.
I’m taking any available space and time to write and publish two books this year! They’re more passion projects for me and it feels like the recharge I was needing. Be on the lookout for a children’s book about business as well as entertaining topics!
