Meet Melanie Gomez

We were lucky to catch up with Melanie Gomez recently and have shared our conversation below.

Melanie , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I am blessed to have grown up with a family that always emphasized the importance and reward that comes with good work ethic. My parents both migrated from Cuba at the age of 26, and worked very hard to give my brother and I the opportunity to have a life in the U.S and be able to carry out our dreams. My parents also taught us that nothing worth having is easy. From a very young age, my parents instilled in me determination, perseverance, discipline, and accountability.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! My name is Melanie and I am a Registered Nurse in Miami, FL. I work in the Pediatric critical care unite full time, but on my days off, I occupy my time filming humorous spanglish videos on instagram and tiktok, as @cafeconscrubs. I have always been involved in the arts, since I could utter a sound. I grew up singing and attended New World school of the Arts for voice! After giving it much thought, I decided to keep music as a hobby and focus my studies on healthcare, my second passion. After some time, I started to miss being able to create and venture into the arts and lucky for me, tiktok was created. I started filming videos singing, making fun of myself as a latina nurse and traveler at the time, and slowly but surely my tiktok account started to grow. I am proud to say that I continue to act and sing on tiktok and have created a loving and powerful community that represents and appreciates latina nurses in Miami!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were the most impactful in my journey was staying true to myself, being consistent, and actually working in miami as a latina nurse myself. I am goofy and have never been shy to show that side of myself to my family and friends, and now my followers on social media. I think that my authentic self is what people truly have enjoyed and what has brought a smile and laughter to those who watch my content. Consistency plays a huge role in the social media world. Being consistent with filming, editing, and posting can take a toll when I have to juggle my full time job and now grad school, but organizing myself and managing my time well has allowed me ample time to continue to create and share my talents with the world. Working in Miami as a latina was quite the experience! I enjoy sharing content that is relatable, especially to the Miami nurses that truly cannot make up what they see day to day at their job.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I admire so many nurses in the workforce and their impact on the nurse community, so much so that if granted the opportunity, I would love nothing more than to work with creators like @nurse.johnn, a nurse who worked in medssurg for 2.5 years just like myself, and is now one of the biggest content creators on social media! He is very relatable and always puts a smile on my face. His content inspires me to continue sharing my goofy side with others and inspire other nurses to do the same. Follow me on @cafeconscrubs !!
