We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Utsav Bajgain a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Utsav, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Self-esteem is founded on the self. My ‘self’ which was a sum total of my mind, intelligence, individuality, identity, experiences and socialization got transformed when i started Transcendental Meditation (TM) in 2013. Through the practice of TM, all these ever changing levels of life – mind, intelligence, individuality, identity, experiences, etc. are transcended, and then the innermost most fundamental level of my self starts to enliven. This is when my ‘self’ became the Self – the one singular Self of all beings and entire existence. It is like a drop becoming the ocean. One i am grounded to the Self, it gives me infinite energy, clarity on who i am and what i can do. This is how i have developed by self-esteem and confidence.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was born in Nepal, raised in India and Japan, now I live, work and teach meditation in the US. I have an Economics degree but I have worked with engineering teams in my entire career in companies like Furukawa, Panasonic, Samsung and Boeing. While I was working, I got into teaching meditation and life coaching by helping people to solve their problems both professional and personal. Having a strong business, consultancy and strategic planning skills, I started solving bigger and bigger problems. And now I find myself at the juncture of solving problems by giving an individual a technique to develop their consciousness so that they are better equipped to solve problems from a more fundamental level. Lately, I have helped many individuals with mental health challenges, PTSD, sleep issues, depression, chronic stress, etc. through the practice of meditation. Doing this, I am able to guide them to better life decisions, finding true purpose and knowing one’s most authentic self.
I teach the Transcendental Meditation technique which is an easy, effortless and natural mediation technique in which the mind settles down so easily to experience more subtle states of awareness and then finally transcend all activity of the mind to experience stillness, inner peace, bliss and joy. There is a very well structured 4 day course to teach the technique but my style is meditator centric, understanding your needs and goals and guiding you accordingly to attain stress-free life, better cognitive capacity, better health, better relationships and how you engage in transforming communities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Ability to remain grounded in your Self goes a long way. I meet with personalities who are storms, if i do not remain grounded and rooted, i am taken away. So, my ability to anchor myself with the practice of TM has had the most impact on me.
2. Knowing your Self: You are more than your body, mind, intelligence, ego, identity and feelings. Having this ongoing journey to find yourself, know your self is what keeps your humble and growing. Keep this momentum going. The most important area of knowledge is the knowledge about your self. Go within, dive within.
3. Interpersonal skill: Our ability to not take things personally. This is a skill and it can be developed. Taking things personally is like getting water in your boat. Your boat will sink. Keep your boat water proof and keep rowing thru the ocean.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When i am overwhelmed, drained or burnt out, i go within, transcend the mind and experience the infinite reservoir of energy within. When you have infinity within, no amount of localized, finite dynamics can contain you. Transcend daily is the one advice i cannot NOT give.
