We were lucky to catch up with Cory Novak recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cory , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Discovering improv during my senior year of high school totally flipped the script for me. It was a game-changer that seriously boosted my confidence and self-esteem. See, I used to be super shy, always dodging the spotlight. But I knew I had to tackle my stage fright and fear of public speaking. Improv was like the perfect crash course to work on that stuff and build up my confidence along the way.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Since the actors’ strike ended a few months back, the industry has been gradually picking up momentum again. Despite the sluggish start, I’ve recently found myself on two different shows for small parts on the Oxygen Network and TWC. It’s been an unexpected but welcomed return. Now, I’m eagerly looking forward to diving back into audition season. I can’t wait to embrace the challenge of tackling new roles and obstacles that come my way.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In reflecting on my journey, I’ve come to recognize three pivotal qualities that have been instrumental in my success:
Firstly, resilience has been paramount. In an industry rife with rejection and setbacks, it’s essential to cultivate the ability to bounce back, no matter how many times we face disappointment. Maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity not only keeps us going but also sets a powerful example for others to emulate.
Secondly, adaptability has played a significant role. As an actor, being open to direction and embracing diverse roles is essential. Stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges has not only expanded my skill set but also enriched my craft.
Lastly, effective communication has been indispensable. In Hollywood, collaboration is key, and no actor operates in isolation. Building strong relationships with agents, managers, coaches, and scene partners is essential for fostering a successful and enduring career.
By honing these qualities—resilience, adaptability, and effective communication—I’ve been able to navigate the complexities of the entertainment industry and forge a path towards fulfillment and longevity in Hollywood.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Right now, my main focus has all been about trying to create my own stuff as an actor, you know? It’s a bit of a challenge, but it’s also super exciting because it means I get to push my creative boundaries even further. I’m diving into this whole world of making my own content, which involves a bunch of different skills like storytelling, production, and managing projects.
