As a former school teacher, I never envisioned leaving behind the security and stability that the profession offered. It was during this period of introspection that I met my partner, Dre, whose unique perspective on life became a catalyst for change. Recognizing a gap in the market for unique, luxury experiences on the west coast, we found ourselves at a pivotal juncture. The decision to venture into the realm of luxury pop-up picnics was not without trepidation. Leaving behind the security of our professions evoked feelings of discomfort and uncertainty. However, it was during this period of unease that we came to understand the adage that discomfort often signals a step in the right direction. We acknowledged that the potential rewards of pursuing our passion far outweighed the temporary discomfort of leaving behind the familiar.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle I am currently facing as a self-employed individual is creating and maintaining a structured framework that holds me accountable. The freedom that comes with being self-employed is liberating, but it also necessitates a significant level of self-discipline and motivation to ensure consistent productivity and progress.
In the absence of external pressures or a traditional hierarchical structure, the challenge lies in cultivating intrinsic motivation and self-discipline. Without the presence of a boss or a set schedule, the drive to show up and perform must come from within. This intrinsic motivation is essential for achieving success in any endeavor, particularly when running one’s own business.
To address this obstacle, I am actively working on establishing personal systems and routines that promote accountability and productivity. This includes setting clear, achievable goals, creating a structured daily schedule, and implementing mechanisms for self-assessment and reflection. By holding myself accountable for the outcomes of my efforts and taking ownership of any mistakes made, I am fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning within my business.
