We were lucky to catch up with Scott Vickers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
The understanding that perfectionism is the enemy of creativity and also to trust my instincts. Creativity comes from experiencing life in all its forms so getting out there and doing new things, challenging myself constantly, putting myself out side of my conforms zone.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a film director and former TV and theatre actor. I’ve had some incredible successes in both fields. My time in TV was a big part of my life, I was a lead actor on BBC River City filmed in Scotland, I was in that was 4 years and it was a fantastic experience. But pretty much my whole life I wanted to make films, I studied screen writing and photography in my 20’s and shot many short films and commercials over the course of my 30’s. I made my first feature film Matriarch in 2018. It won best film at Glasgow Horror Fest, did a theatrical run in Scotland and Los Angeles and was picked up by Lionsgate. Matriarch was also featured in many top ten lists like Fangoria. It was a micro budget film so an incredible success. It also launched Charlie Blackwoods career in Film and TV.
I was subsequently signed my 3 Arts Entertainment and went into development on my 2nd feature film. Covid arrived and threw a spanner in the works as it did for many people so that delayed my second film but things are moving again we several films ready to shoot later this year.
But something I’m very proud of is my new venture. Interact Screen Actors Academy. A fully online acting school. A real alternative to drama school. Something I’ve been wanting to launch for years. Its needed. So many talented people are unable to get the proper training because they cannot afford to move to a city or go to drama school. Or even go to regular acting classes. The world of screen acting is changing and it is absolutely possible now to train to become a professional actor without going to drama school or living in a big city. This year alone I’ve helped actors sign up with some fantastic agents simply with self-tapes and communicating via zoom. So many productions hire actors based on self-tapes. Interact Screen Actors Academy offers a real commitment from myself to support actors to be equipped with what is needed to work in the industry. I personally train them and bring in casting directors to work with them also. Its an exciting project. I’ve already helped dozens of aspiring actors become professional actors with agents and acting work.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1.Mindset mastery. 2.Dedication and commitment to my art.
3.Finding a mentor.
Working on my mind and understanding damaging thinking is incredibly important for a human being wanting to succeed in life or in business. Understanding my mind changed everything for me with my acting journey and directing. Understanding how we interpret the world around us and the meaning we put on things is paramount to being at your best.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My wife. Nicola just happens to be a leading mindset expert. She introduced me to a type of mindset technology that is incredibly powerful. Nic has direct lineage to some of the leading psychologists or our time and I have been lucky enough to be taught by her and her colleagues in the work.
