Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lisa Carey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lisa , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Strange, but I really believe that my purpose finds me. Throughout my life I’ve always been in conversation with myself, asking questions, getting curious, and moving toward what makes me feel most alive — doing things I’m passionate about. I’ve come to know that what we give attention to grows and expands. So when I put my energies into trying new things and giving my all, I’m rewarded with a sense of purpose, sort of a responsibility where I own it. It’s fun to see where it takes me and how it connects me with others. I guess that’s my way of giving.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
When I turned 65 I closed the doors on my public relations agency after 33 years in the industry. But I never felt like I was done. I’d just reached that part of my life when it was my turn to do things I want to do, just because.
Not one to be idle, I found it fascinating to open up a conversation about what women never want to about = aging. So I set out to create an on-line community where women gather to learn ways to feel empowered and to celebrate what it feels like to be their best selves regardless of how many trips around the sun. With the goal of changing up the narrative on aging I felt the first step was how we see ourselves, especially when we are constantly bombarded with messages of anti-aging and age-defying. Why not make our ageless authenticity the best part of who we are. To me, it begins with an intention, where we get to choose. So, in the midst of Covid lock down I went to work. IntentfullyFiT.com is now up and running; an interactive website that’s an online oasis for women over 50. In themes of Lifestyle, Fitness, Mindfulness, and Wellness we speak out on topics we’re curious about and the very real challenges we face. Experts offer tips, and amazing women share their stories of inspiration with in-depth features that help us see just how limitless we truly are. We see pieces of ourselves and are encouraged to say “if she can do it so can I.”
I got the idea back when I decided to let my hair go grey. I was amazed at how liberating it felt to be more of the real me. It made me wonder what else was perhaps limiting my perspectives. Now I”m doing what makes my heart sing, sharing it, and learning as I go. It’s what keeps me engaged, “Intentfully Fit,” and having fun.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Good things take time, and the mistakes you make along the way are essential to the process.
2. Don’t be afraid to think out of the box and go where you are led. I’ve found there are many ways to achieve what you’re after as long as you are willing to get out of your comfort zone and explore a bit.
3. Acknowledge and appreciate what you are learning about yourself as you grow. We are often so focused on the end game, we miss out on all the little achievements we gain along the way. Like resilience and compassion, they give our lives more meaning and can only be cultivated from within. That’s when success feels good on you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would welcome the chance to collaborate with other seasoned women who are open to sharing their personal stories and/or expertise for our community of agers. We all benefit from learning and connecting. My goal with IF is to provide a place where each of us feels seen and heard. A space where we feel at home with ourselves and each other.
