Meet Boateng M.

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Boateng M.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Boateng, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
I am grateful for the extensive human, environmental, and social efforts that have brought me to where I am today. In moments of reflection, I express thanks to the trees and plants for the essential oxygen they provide. I appreciate my legs for their role in helping me walk, and I acknowledge the past advocates from various backgrounds, such as queer, Black, immigrant, and women, who have paved the way for the agency and freedoms I enjoy. The care and contributions from both individuals and the world around me evoke a deep sense of gratitude, motivating me to reciprocate by sharing and embracing generosity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Business Development and Strategy: Effective business development and strategy involve attentive listening. While it may be simple to assume what someone wants or needs, the true challenge lies in thorough assessment and providing the necessary clarity to directly address those needs. Skills in development and strategy require dedicated research and the patience to genuinely understand the perspectives and requirements of others.

Partnership and Relationship Building: The essence of successful partnership and relationship building lies in establishing a deliberate, gradual connection with individuals and audiences. Making a phone call, showing up in person, or extending a thoughtful follow-up might seem insignificant, but I’ve witnessed how these small gestures contribute to demonstrating genuine care. These moments collectively build trust, forming the foundation for a mutually beneficial and cooperative relationship.

Curiosity: Cultivating curiosity involves the commitment to ask questions and actively listen to the responses received from the world. It’s about dedicating time and attention to understanding the intricacies of various perspectives and experiences.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I am fortunate to have been raised by a mother who instilled in me a deep sense of caring for the world. She consistently emphasized the importance of how we treat people. Despite being a single-parent West African immigrant, she always found ways to support her communities. Whether it was assisting our Bronx neighbors struggling to secure plane tickets for their parents to come to the US, providing financial aid to an undocumented immigrant colleague grappling with bills, or, to this day, gifting her home health aides every Christmas as a token of gratitude for their hard work—my mother has been a guiding force teaching me that the extent of one’s fortune is closely tied to their ability to enrich the lives of others.
