Meet Tamica Hughes

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamica Hughes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tamica, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding my purpose so natural. Ever since I was a young girl, I had the heart to give to others. I always wanted to do things to help inspire others if I could help them in anyway I would lend helping hand or whatever it was that I had that they could have to make them feel better, I am a true giver.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a professional hairstylist of 29 years. I am the co-owner of Pink Kotur hair salon in Greensboro North Carolina. My passion for hair is to make people look and feel good. I have a very loyal and supportive clientele. They support me in all my endeavors.. In 2019 I birth Level Up Parenting. It is a nonprofit for single moms. Our mission is to transform the mindset of single moms by instilling in them inreachment opportunities that teaches them how to excel at Parenting. I myself was teen mom and a single mom at the age of 16. I firsthand know the struggles of what it is to be a single mother. I have always helped young mothers, and I decided to start a nonprofit, but I could help them on a larger scale and impact my community. I have been blessed to open a brick and mortar For my nonprofit in 2023. Single Mom can come to our location and receive free, diapers, wipes, and gently use clothes. We also have parenting classes I’ll go to help mothers and’s families. We are one of many resources here in Greensboro. I really enjoy working with the Mom building, relationship and mentoring to them. At times it can be a lot when you’re dealing with different walks of life and people who have childhood trauma and mental illness and live in poverty. It is my goal to help give them the hope that they need as well as the education and the twos to be their best self. I have a big heart and I just want help one person at a time.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My three qualities and skills are my creativity with my hands, knowledge, and strength. My creative skills with my hands to do hair, creative mind when doing any kind of project or craft. It is a gift from God. Once I tapped into my creative skills of doing hair, I began to make people look phenomenal. The knowledge came from getting an education and learning at a early age how to survive When living in poverty. Growing up and housing projects and being a teen mom I had to learn how to survive and do better so that I could be a great mother to my son. You have to tap in to what it is you want to be and why you want it and how you gonna get there . Being able to do hair, I was able to make the money that I needed to give my son a better life. Pushing through the struggle working hard using the resources in my community I was able to overcome all of the statistics of growing up in poverty, and where you would end. My strength came from God. Finding that relationship with God early on, gave me the strength when I was weak or felt like I couldn’t make it.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The past 12 months of my life has been life-changing as the Founder of Level Up Parenting I have really been recognized through my community with different awards and accolades. The best Nonprofit was voted at the goat awards. Recognize for Community service from Las Amigas. Recognize from the Huami Magazine. On the cover of 45 Empire magazine and the Forest oaks community magazine. The community guarantee, nonprofit spotlight in the Cone Foundation. Receive a grant to open up a brick and mortar for Level Up Parenting. Completed our first eight week in person class. Being asked to speak at different engagements. It has been phenomenal. I am honored to tell people my story where I come from and where I’m going..
