We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryce Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bryce, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I just have to go out and observe sometimes. Maybe some inspiration will come from watching other people. Maybe something will happen to me. The best method for me is just writing about what’s going on and how I feel about it. I can pull from past experiences, time with friends, time with family, or whatever else pops into my mind. All of it is fair game.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a comedian living in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I go to Memphis about once a week for open mics. Sometimes, I get to do comedy in Little Rock. And I go to a weekly open mic in Jonesboro, which I host from time to time. Standup comedy is so exciting to me, because it’s among the purest of art forms. From the stage, there is nowhere to hide. It’s just the comedian and the audience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The top, most important skill to have is just being in tune with your audience. And the only way to work on that is to get onstage and pay attention to how they reapond throughout your material. Number two is speaking concisely. If you ramble, you’ll lose your audience’s attention. It’s best to avoid making your material too wordy. Get to the point, and keep going.
The third biggest skill is discipline. You have to keep working. If put videos online, you have to keep making those. Keep going to open mics. Never stop working on your craft. It’s the only way to improve.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
For me, the only way to get past feeling overwhelmed is to just start working on something somewhere. I sometimes get overwhelmed when I feel like I have too much to record and post. So I just try to get started. If I have to write something, I try to pick a topic and just go with it. See where I end up. It really helps me to.just kickstart the workflow, and then I get everything done.
