We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaToya Ball a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaToya, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
Generosity. Wow, that word has a major impact, and to be thought of in that manner is an honor. I guess I could say that’s where it started. I have always wanted to be impactful and wanted to leave people with something memorable and I believe the world is lacking love, grace, peace, and kindness. I was always raised to give and treat others the way I want to be treated, so this was simple for me. I appreciate kindness, grace, love love and so that’s what I give. It has paid off very well for me. In return, I have healthy sustainable relationships that bring me peace. What it does for my own mental and emotional health has been truly life-changing. It helps me thrive in all my assignments of purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the proud founder of Milestones Elevation Community Development. My commitment is to the advancement of social progress of the overlooked and underprivileged community through education, empowerment, and providing resources, encouragement, and support to change the narrative of legacy and wealth in the African American community. The vision is through financial literacy, the study of emotional intelligence, proper nutrition, and a community of grace and forgiveness to offer opportunities to families that will prepare them for a lineage of change and purpose. One day we hope to have public recognition and revitalization of all Thriving wealthy black communities erased by society.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful qualities and areas of knowledge in this journey would be Collaboration, Community, and Emotional Intelligence. The advice I have for people early in their journey to developing these qualities is to be open-minded and aware of themselves. Recognizing who you are and how you show up in spaces plays a major role in the community you build and your role. Owning your strengths and recognizing and building your weaknesses, shows just how serious you are to the mission.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I would have to say the most impactful thing my parents did for me was to always keep me grounded in GOD and relationships. I always knew from my upbringing that no matter how I messed up or disappointed society I always could find solace in my GOD so to keep that relationship strong, and at the forefront of everything I do.
