Meet Cindy-Ann Boisson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cindy-Ann Boisson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cindy-Ann below.

Cindy-Ann , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Honestly, I do not think I have a choice.

Well, maybe I do but, the alternative would be to give up/in and that is not happening.

When I did comedy the first time I never imagined it would become something I would do on a regular basis. Certainly not a career. Lo & behold the opportunity to produce my own shows came and that catapulted me into an entirely new realm: Performer/Producer.

As a performer, if someone hates my jokes or my delivery, or just my presence on stage, there’s very little I can do. Comedy is very subjective and I understand that. Hecklers rarely derail me unless they attempt to get physical. If someone is being disruptive or disrespectful, you learn to deal with the situation in a way that gets the audience on your side. They (the audience) paid for a show and if all goes according to plan, would demand the heckler either stfu or be removed. There are times when the audience hates you for a justifiable reason. Could be that they weren’t prepared, they weren’t your demographic OR they did not have a sense of humor. You do your job, Then sit in your car and bawl your eyes out. That helps in the short term BUT then you pick up the pieces and continue on your quest to find your tribe.

The role of producer is trickier. You’re playing to different personalities and heavily dependent on the cooperation of others in order to succeed. In my experience this is where I’ve had to truly dig deep and persevere. My dad was extremely ambitious and decisive, quick to sever ties with anyone that didn’t support his dream/vision. I remember thinking…well, that’s kinda harsh. But the reality is you have to. If a thought enters my mind and I feel very strongly about it, there’s very little anyone can say to convince me otherwise: it is ON! I am pushing forward. I am prepared to take the risk and I need to see it through. I am prepared to fail and learn.

Sometimes people think they are helping by giving advice. However, to quote Joan Rivers “Don’t follow any advice, no matter how good, until you feel as deeply in your spirit as you think in your mind that the counsel is wise”. That quote resides in my head and my heart. Oftentimes I don’t think some people have ill intentions, they are just too comfortable to give their opinion on matters in which they lack expertise. I consider myself very intuitive and I pray a lot, so over the years I have learned to trust my gut. If my heart says Yay, then it’s YAY.

Now, admittedly I am an obsessive worrier: I would worry no matter what, so I almost always choose to worry about persevering through the storms, as opposed to worrying about what anyone has to say.

In short, I do what feels right for me and hold close the words of counselors I consider wise.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Cindy-Ann Boisson born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago based in South Florida.

I’m a Standup comedian, storyteller event producer and host.

I love the art of comedy/storytelling. As a performer I can be vulnerable, candid, expressive. I get to invite the audience into my existence, evoke rib ticking laughter, some tears, some groans (lol) and stir up memories. I get to distract them from their misery and they  *get to listen to my shit*.

I also feel I have an obligation to educate people about Trinidad and Tobago. Surprisingly, there are people who know very little to nothing about my twin islands. I’m the only comedian (that I know of) doing standup comedy on the international circuit with a Trini accent. That comes with some challenges but mostly draws people in. They listen.

As a producer, along with my team, we curate spectacular events both in Florida and my home country, Trinidad and Tobago under the Mauvais Langue brand.

Trini is my soul. I love that, through comedy, I can flaunt our culture: our food, our music, our talent. It’s a cultural amalgamation taking shape and I am proud of that.

I also love working with children and participate as a volunteer in reading ambassador programs. Additionally, this year is the third year I am producing a fun and engaging children’s comedy workshop called Tickled.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Unbridled ambition! For sure.Faith! Faith has kept me going.

My parents. They believed in me. Mum didn’t think I was afraid of anything and my dad encouraged me to dream. He supported all my crazy ideas.

Silence is as good a response as any.
My intuition has truly been my superpower.

My advice would be to take the step, any step, Just move. Pay attention, Listen. Read. Pray. Mind your damn business.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Myself. I am my main obstacle. Getting out of my head is a challenge

I’m challenging myself to be more supportive of women. Not in a pretentious way, in a good wholesome way. There’s always a lot of trash talk about women in business.  The men joke about us a lot. A lot!
My hope is not to be a part of the problem. More importantly, to stay out the way of the women I don’t support (it’s okay. We are all on different journeys) Respect their game and stay focused on mine. I am challenging myself to love on my sister friends hard!
