We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Oxner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
When I started this business there were people who to me I would never be successful and would minimize what I do. I understood early on that those people weren’t going to be people I shared this journey with. I persist by not internalizing the hate and using the words of the nay-sayers as motivation to work harder. In the end I want to prove them wrong.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a wedding planner, coordinator and designer, I adore what I do because I get to capture a couples personality and story in their wedding design. My goal is not to have cookie cutter, copied from Pinterest wedding days but to create something that is uniquely and special to the couple. This year we have a wedding in the south of France that will be different than anything we have done in the past. I am excited for the couple and grateful for our vendor partners.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I make a habit of learning something from every wedding. While perfect wedding days are the goal and we pull off events beautifully there is always something to learn, whether it is about the couples culture, or the venue that can make us better in the future. I am always willing to say yes to a new challenge. I have made a point of consistently taking on things that make me uncomfortable to ensure the growth of the company.
I have systems in place to ensure consistency. Every wedding is unique, some are traditional, some are as non traditional as the couple can make them. No matter what my job doesn’t change, every wedding is planned using the same planning structure and way of doing things. This ensures we are not recreating the wheel with every wedding and that every area is taken care of for the couple.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I talk to my team. I have a tendency to try to do everything myself, neglecting sleep to get everything done. I am thankful that over the past year I have hired a group of amazing dependable women. If I need to find new solutions to a problem I have gone over in my mind, they are my sounding board. If I have too much on my plate, they are there to lighten the load. If I show up to an event and have a 14 hour day, they offer coffee. They are the people who make my job fun.
