Meet Mikayla Brown

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mikayla Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikayla , so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
With creativity and writing I noticed that the more I work the less I have time to enjoy free time which is usually when I watch tv, or read a book, or just scroll through social media. I think consuming media is a huge part of sparking creativity because you can just mindlessly watch and sometimes something random can inspire a article. Even going outside and taking a break from screens is a good way to hit the reset button and replenish my creativity. However my most valuable tip for writer’s block is to talk with other creatives and writers. It really helped me realize that I’m not alone, and that everyone has a period of creative drought.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
With 904 culture my goal is to highlight the good values of Jacksonville Florida and surrounding areas. With the everything going on globally I want 904 culture to be a place we’re you can give your mind ease knowing that something great is happening right around the corner. A chance for people to read about local success stories, upcoming events and find their favorite artists. I think the most exciting thing about 904 culture is that it’s always growing and more and more people are getting involved and sharing their stories each day. It’s also a physical magazine so everyone who purchases will always be able to look back on what was happening during that specific time in the city. We just released issue #5 and will be starting up interviews for issue#6 very soon. All previous releases can be purchased at 904culture.com

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful skills on this journey have been communication, writing, and Networking . I would advise anyone early on their journey to practice holding good conversations rather than just quick greetings. The more I started to hold conversations the more I realized just how many businesses/ people go unseen in this city. Talking with others also helps build vocabulary which has definitely helps to improve my writing skills. But overall I think the best way for anyone starting early on any business journey is to Network. Go to all the local events in and around the city get to know people in your same field as a friend don’t make it a competition because everyone brings something different. With social media being so popular now it’s also easy to just follow someone and network through messaging.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
904 culture is always looking for a new article to share. We showcase artist, businesses big or small, events, pop up shops, chefs, activist anything you can name. If you are interested or know anyone interested in sharing a story with us they can email 904.culturemag@gmail.com and we would love to work with them. Also we would love to collaborate with some events and organizations around the city so feel free to email any questions about that as well.
