We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jill Levine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jill below.
Hi Jill, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
The lack of belief in myself started, I believe, from the moment of conception. I am an adopted child, born to a mother who denied knowing she was pregnant and a father who was never told of my existence. Not being wanted was something it felt like I was born into. It took me decades to recognize the undercurrent of “you’re not worthy, you’re not wanted, you don’t deserve” and how this undercurrent had carved so much of life, my choices, and my relationships. While my adoptive family, whom I consider my real family, was wonderful and provided an idyllic childhood, these beliefs were rooted in my cells.
Overcoming these messages started with energy work called dowsing, yoga, and daily affirmations. The woman who introduced me to dowsing and became my teacher helped me identify and work through beliefs I didn’t realize I was holding.
As I grew stronger and became more aware, I started doing Body Balance classes, a Tai Chi, Yoga, and Pilates fusion class, that let me move my body and then rest my overactive mind. I started reading affirmations daily. Things like “I am worthy, I am wanted, I am worthy and deserving of all success,” filled the Pinterest Board I created. Oprah Winfrey had a free meditation series with Deepak Chopra at the time I found myself learning how to meditate more intentionally.
As time went on, I discovered another teacher who hosted full moon circles and one of them had an inner child healing component. That provided some light bulb realizations about how to heal these younger parts of myself. Inner child healing branched into my dowsing work. By this point, I had learned how to dowse and did this energy work for myself nearly daily.
There was not one simple way to work towards healing imposter syndrome and the self-doubt that stemmed from not believing in myself or my worth. It feels like a lifetime of work building the beautiful life I’ve now created. I wish I had these teachers, tools and the courage to look within when I was younger but am grateful for the mindset shifts and progress that I’ve made over the years. I’m even happier I can help other people do the same.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work with people to amplify healing, help them move through transitions in their lives, navigate uncertainty, work through limiting beliefs and imposter syndrome, find hope and create the lives they’ve imagined for themselves. My practice is a blend of energy work and coaching. I get to stay in non-judgmental curiosity with my clients, listening to their stories, the parts where they get stuck and ask questions, offer insight, or move energy to help them create their path forward from where they’re at to where they want to be.
I have seen for my clients and myself the benefits of this kind of healing work and it is life changing. My goal is to be of service to my clients, to help them find their light, to live the life they are called to live, and ultimately, to raise the vibration of the planet. As each person finds and activates their light within, the whole world benefits. We need more people turning their lights on, elevating the world, creating conscious relationships, and living into their highest abilities. I’m here to support people in this process.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think being honest with myself and my teachers, owning my difficult emotions like fear and anger and learning how to move through them, and learning to drop the protective mask I had created for myself were the things that were at the foundation of change in my journey. I couldn’t have done any of that without the support of my teachers, family, friends and Divine Guides.
My advice for those early on their journey is to know you’re not alone, to find the right support that feels good inside of yourself, and to know it may feel scary to let your guard down. Know with the right support people, you can move from self-doubt to self-love, from feeling like an imposter to owning your energy, your gifts and your light, and to not give up. The voices of doubt can absolutely be reprogrammed. Think of yourself as a computer that needs a programming upgrade. The new program can be one of encouragement and light that honors the gifts that are inherent to your being.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Have several tools in your toolbox for combatting overwhelm. There is magic in our breath, so taking a moment to breathe can help substantially. It sounds simple but people often forget how to breathe, full, nurturing breaths. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Breathe so deeply that your belly rises as you inhale and falls as you exhale.
Next, make lists of everything you need to do. These can be on your phone in the notes app, one a piece of paper or on a sticky note. I attended a conference by Marshal Thurber years ago where he taught us to select the vital three things from our to-do list and consider our list complete for the day when we complete those three things. Certainly, if time allows, one can move down the list, but this reframing of the vital three can change your sense of accomplishment as many to-do lists can be endless.
Get outside, even if it’s only for a moment, and breathe. The more overwhelmed you feel, the more this can help. It may seem counterintuitive but movement can increase productivity.
Grab your yoga mat and go to a class. There is beauty in grounding your feet to the earth and moving your body to calm down the overwhelming thoughts and feelings.
Connect with your partner or a friend. Having a listening ear can help and an outside set of eyes can often see solutions the overwhelm is preventing you from seeing.
Dowsing is a great way to clear stuck, stagnate energies and remove the energy of overwhelm that’s disconnecting us from our higher selves.
