Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike Blumenthal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mike, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My dad lost his father at the age of 13. They were extremely poor and left with no time for excuses and no choice but to work hard.
Shortly thereafter, my dad started his first business selling wholesale candy out of their home and working to help pay the bills.
My dad created a similar resiliency and entrepreneurial spirit in me growing up. When things went wrong, we had a 5-minute rule to feel all the emotions and then focus on moving forward. Whether it was losing a sports game at the last second or making a mistake in school, there was positive reinforcement for accepting what happened and moving on.
My parents made sure to emphasize that life was unfair, there were going to be challenges, and what matters more is how you react to what happens to you.
This mantra was put to the test when my mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer in 2020. We all took turns caring for my mother, keeping her comfortable, and ultimately being present in the moment until the very end.
Terminal illness was not new to my father and he was the strongest of us all when it was time to be there for my mom’s final moments.
In our family, Resilience means that you are strong. That you have endured significant challenges and come out the other side with a newfound perspective on what really matters in life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My business, SaaS Lead Flow, helps founders build the business of their dreams. The service-based business I offer helps early-stage Software-as-a-Service founders find customers and generate revenue using proven lead-generation systems.
The unique differentiator for SaaS Lead Flow is the emphasis on building an asset and systems that can live on well beyond our engagement together. I am also a founder so I understand the challenges of building a business and try to alleviate that by scaling their customer acquisition process.
I started building my first tech company in college and fell in love with using data to make decisions. We took a tool from 0-> 6,000 users in about 9 months using digital marketing strategies and now I’ve pioneered those learnings into a system that I implement with tech founders across the world.
My latest product is called “SaaS Lead Flow on Auto-Pilot” and it focuses on scaling lead generation systems for busy founders and marketers.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important skills that got me to this point are 1) Reflection
2) Growth Mindset
3) Ability to execute
When I look back on the last 28 years of life and the last 8 years building tech companies I see 3 themes.
1/ The ability to reflect on what went well (and what did not) so I can improve
2/ A willingness to try new things, learn from others, and fail.
3/ Getting things done
Without the above 3 items, it is really difficult to grow as a person and a business.
You constantly need to be evaluating what you’re doing.
In the age of AI, you need to be willing to learn new skills and try new things to get ahead of the competition.
Finally, there is no substitute for hard work and execution. Many people are dreamers and have great ideas. But there are sayers and there are doers. Doers are the ones who make the world go round. Getting in the trenches, taking action, and putting yourself out there are critical to succeed.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am constantly networking and meeting new people.
A wise friend told me recently that every week you should
1) Meet with someone ahead of you in business
2) Collaborate with someone who is a peer and at a similar level
3) Send the ladder back down and mentor someone who is looking to get started
Right now, I am looking to work with founders who are solving a great problem and are in the process of building a tech company
If you are trying to break into tech and learn about business development then I would be happy to have a conversation about mentorship
