Meet Ryan Johnson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryan Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ryan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic seems so out of my control sometimes. The times I’ve been at rock bottom have given me the best work ethic because I feel like I have to fight even harder. I also use no and ghosting as a workhorse. I flourish when painted into a corner. Say I’m not good enough and I’ll find 3 better opinions to prove yours wrong. Opposition really fuels my work ethic these days and I see the rewards time and time again. I have no doubt I’ll reach a level I want. How soon is the question.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At this stage, I’m working on my mental health campaign. I sing a lot about mental deterioration and present it as a cautionary tale at my shows. I always have free suicide prevention information on my merch table at every show. The goal is to save lives and help people understand how normal it is to not want to exist sometimes, but as life ebbs and flows you find reason upon reason to stay and less reasons to leave. My art is meant to inspire conversation and acceptance while coming to natural conclusions of what to offer the world.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Acceptance is one of the best qualities I can ever offer or ask for. With that comes openness and also rest. To accept things as they want and need to be is beautiful, but there also needs to be realistic logic with that. It has to be what’s right and good for whatever it serves. Perspective shifting is a learned skill for me. Once I started work on viewing the world around me as a linear flow in need of not only preservation, but growth, I started having so many realizations. It’s given me a sense of community and how we have more responsibilities than we thought here on earth. So, acceptance, logic, and perspective shifts are the qualities that have helped unlock new avenues in my journey and I am forever grateful for learning them.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have to name drop Ben Wendt who is an amazing human being and crazy talented creative. He inspires me every second I see him. The way he looks and talks to you makes you feel so important and special and I see it warm hearts constantly. He also recognizes things in people no one ever does. He had a huge part in bringing me out of box by telling me how beautiful my box was. It’s so encouraging and wonderful to be recognized for putting a part of yourself out there. Ben not only acknowledges it, he welcomes and nurtures it. It’s given me so much to glean and inspires me constantly to realize how precious everyone and everything is. Everyone is special. Everyone is on rockstar level.
