Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meghann Kettler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Meghann with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I come from a long line of incredibly hard working people. Both my parents instilled a strong work ethic in me and my siblings from a young age. We were expected to do chores, maintain straight As (while playing sports), help out around the house on weekends and donate our time volunteering as well. My parents both worked full time and eventually went into business together as small business owners. They taught me how to lead in business and I seemed to come into the entrepreneurial role quite naturally. I’ve worked relentlessly the last 20 years self employed as a designer & creative director and then starting Sacred Ace Skincare and growing this business the past 5 years. Their driven personalities have motivated me and kept me pushing despite some incredible obstacles.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Sacred Ace Skincare was founded to harness the power of cannabis topically, producing clean skincare solutions for those with skin issues and sensitive skin. We take a holistic approach to formulating, purposefully selecting the highest-quality full spectrum cannabidiol and botanical ingredients. We never use harsh chemicals, parabens, sulfates or phthalates, and we pride ourselves on having the highest regard for the environment and a focus on sustainability.
Our company began with three women – all of whom struggled with our own skin issues, sensitivities, and allergies for most of our lives. We found that CBD in clean beauty products was helping a wide range of skin issues (without any side effects). CBD is most commonly known for its pain relieving and calming properties, but we saw results for so many ailments like moisture retention, acne, eczema, dermatitis and dry scalp. We even see improvements in mature skin, elasticity, tone and texture. So we teamed up with a CBD skincare chemist and Sacred Ace Skincare was born. We collaborated with a number of veteran estheticians, massage therapists, bodyworkers and anyone we could find with skin sensitivities to perfect the line over the course of years. We produce products for the skin, hair, nails, pain and pleasure.
When used topically, CBD has a plethora of skin benefits. It’s highly anti-inflammatory making it great for reducing redness and swelling in the face. It penetrates the skin barrier, hydrating deep into the epidermis and locking in moisture, while creating a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. It will even skin tone, discoloration or dark spots and generally heals the skin more quickly. It can do all of this because it’s basically a superfood – it’s packed with vitamins (A, B, C, E), antioxidants and essential fatty acids, making it great for improving skin elasticity. Not only that, it’s known that we have CB or cannabinoid receptors in our bodies that work with the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. We’ve even seen it reduce and heal acne because CBD helps moderate sebum production and is incredibly anti-inflammatory. The proof is in the results we have seen and the customer testimonials we’ve received. Our active ingredient is highly effective and is helping a number of skin concerns.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Learn how to roll with the punches, become a problem solver, and always persevere. You will want to quit, but don’t give up!
I would say the best advice I could give is to make sure you’re following your passion. Being a business owner is a ton of work, but it helps doing something you love and work that helps people! Don’t be ashamed to utilize the expertise of others – I could have never created this company alone, it takes an entire team. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and reach out on collaborations. Collaboration over competition!
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The challenges we face lie in the fact that CBD is not FDA approved, which means we’re sort of stuck in a no-man’s land. Additionally there is a ton of regulation by big tech, who has been reluctant to allow a CBD presence online. For example we can’t advertise on Meta, Tik Tok, Pinterest & Google, and we’re constantly shadow-banned and censored on these platforms. It makes it very difficult to grow the business and get the traction needed with these restrictions in place. We also can’t use Paypal or Venmo to collect payment and are stuck with high credit card processing fees because they consider CBD products a “high risk product.” Now let’s remember that we are a topical skincare company, we do not produce ingestibles, and have peer reviewed studies to prove our claims. It seems that policy change is long overdue before we can really achieve success and fairness online.
