We recently connected with Dr. Paulette Harper – Self Publishing Coach, Author, and TV Host and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Paulette , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When I think about the definition of resilience, it’s someone who recovers quickly from difficulties and someone who has the capacity to withstand. I’ve been through enough ups, downs, trials, and difficulties in life that required me to build skills to endure hardships. So many times, I’ve had to adapt to life’s misfortunes and setbacks. Having resilience allowed me to harness my inner strength, which helped me rebound from setbacks and challenges.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder of Harper Media and One Story University, where I specialize in producing anthologies and serve as the creative story coach to aspiring authors, providing author coaching, marketing, and business coaching to entrepreneurs. As the TV host for Now Faith Is TV, I provide guests with opportunities to gain exposure and visibility for their products and services.
As a Marketplace leader and publisher, I provide authors with a platform to become best-selling authors in our book collaborations, and as a result of our collaborations, I have created over 120+ best-selling authors.
I enable my clients to build their confidence, grow, and see new possibilities while creating the results they desire. I challenge them to unlock and expand their creative thinking, which empowers them to tap into their creativity by sharing their stories.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As an entrepreneur, three most important qualities that have been impactful in my journey is:
- Being persistent—despite being comfortable with the possibility of failure, successful entrepreneurs do not easily give up. Instead, they view failure as a chance for personal development and learning. Along the entrepreneurial journey, numerous hypotheses are proven wrong, and some ventures may even fail completely. What sets successful entrepreneurs apart is their ability to embrace mistakes, maintain curiosity, and persevere until they achieve their objectives.
- Be a risk taker—entrepreneurship, by its very nature, requires individuals to embrace and manage risk in their pursuit of business success. While the willingness to take risks is a fundamental characteristic of entrepreneurs, it is important to recognize that not all risks are equal, and entrepreneurs must adopt a strategic approach to navigate them effectively.
- In addition to embracing risk, entrepreneurs must also cultivate consistency in their business practices. Consistency is a vital attribute that contributes to long-term success and sustainability.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book that has played an important role in my development is Think and Grow Rich (A Black Choice). A few of the nuggets include such statements as, “If you change your mindset, you change your thinking.” “Belief is the key to the basic mind power that turns dreams into realities, the mental into physical. The key to your riches and transformation for the better is a deeply ingrained belief.”
