Bessie , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
I have a very generous family. I was raised by my maternal grandparents and aunt. I grew up seeing them give to the homeless, charity for the church and welcome neighbors into their home for a hot meal. My mother was also one to provide to others. My mother was an amazing cook. She would make meals and offer them to her friends and neighbors. Giving is in my blood!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up in the Logan Section of Philadelphia. I am one out of 7 seven children (I’m the middle child). I wasn’t raised with my siblings but I did grow up knowing them. My parents battled drug addiction and as a result, a few of my siblings were subjected to the foster care system. The foster care system is what sparked my desire to become a Social Worker. Becoming an inventor was far off of my radar.
In 2019 I began my journey of inventing and entrepreneurship. This journey came about from frustration as a parent and not finding what ink was in need of for a better parenting experience. The Brush Bib which is a silicone protective splash guard that goes around bottle brushes , was my first invention. I was tired of going to work with water stains on my blouse from washing dishes , so I created a splash guard and named it the Brush Bib! Once I realized my capabilities in being able to bring my ideas to life, I began to create more products that would be beneficial to both the parent and the baby. As of today, we have 4 unique products on the market and 3 new products coming out this year.
The goal is to continue to expand and scale! We are now a 6 figure company and can be found in over 200 Shoprite and Fresh Grocer stores!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being Solution Focused and Driven has been the most impactful in my journey and in my life! I always find a way out of what I sometimes think is no way.
My advice for entrepreneurs who are in their early stages to remain focused on the end goal. Of course , life gets in the way, but keep your eye on the ULTIMATE PRIZE.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me is that they often told me how proud they were of me. Having them praise me built confidence within me! And I know that no matter what, I made them proud.
