We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Manny Dela Rosa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Manny below.
Manny, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
From my mother! She was born in the Philippines, didn’t finish elementary, and so, Anastasia, the country girl moved to the big city of Manila to find a job and feed her siblings! She was faced with a lot of adversities but she was able to send me to a private, exclusive Catholic school and give me a great life! I learned, through her, that hard work, perseverance, and belief in oneself can help you overcome anything!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Manny the Movie Guy has always had a passion for movies. His love of film criticism started while working for his school newspaper at Purdue University in Indiana. Upon graduation, Manny was offered a full-scholarship to complete his Post-Baccalaureate degree in Film at the School of the Arts Institute in Chicago.
Currently, Manny is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) where he votes for the yearly Critics Choice Awards.
Manny the Movie Guy is a multiple Emmy-award winning film critic/host based in Palm Springs, California. He’s a radio, newspaper, and TV personality who melts everyone’s hearts with his giggles.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three skills/knowledge I want to impart are:
1. The value of education — I would not reach what I attained in America if I didn’t go to school at Purdue University, The skills I gained there as a communicator helped me land my dream job!
2. The desire to be the best in everything — my inner guide dictates me to work hard and strive harder to excel in everything my heart desires. I do have a little competitive streak but that is because I want to be the best student, the best worker, the best film critic. I may not be the best but the journey to get there is life-affirming and teaches valuable lessons.
3. Be kind — I do believe that you can have people move mountains for you if you’re kind and sweet about it. I also subscribe to the notion that being nice, even facing adversities, is not only good for your blood pressure but also for your soul and spirit.
So, go to school, work harder than anyone, and do it all with a smile!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I follow these steps:
1. Take a deep breath
2. Analyze the situation and come up with a few solutions in your head
3. Analyze each solution and create a plan B if needed
4. Pick the best solution and follow your heart — your heart will never betray you!
5. Surround yourself with positive people all the time!
The bottomline? Use both your mind and your heart when faced with a challenging situation. Think of possible solutions and then let your heart guide you.
