We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Conway a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I think I was confident from such a young age that I can’t speak to how I gained that confidence, but I can tell you how I’ve lost and gained confidence throughout my life beyond childhood.
- Why is confidence important to you? Is it because you are important and you’d like to do well in life? If so, you know that you have value. So start there. You have value and you are the only thing that matters. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. You have worth regardless of outside input so be happy with yourself. If you have things you’d like to change, you can still be happy with yourself – you just look at the issues you’d like to fix, and be proud of the person you are for addressing them and keeping them separate from what you call your identity. You are NOT just the things that you do (or don’t do). You can change those things instantly. So, you’re the person that decides who you are and puts that into action.
- You are good at some thing(s). Make sure you know what they are. When you feel like doubting yourself, remind yourself of your strengths. If you can’t think of anything you’re good at now, that’s a good problem – all you have to do is keep data points to track all of the good things that happen and look at what hand you took in making them happen. Rinse and repeat. It can be things that are very minor like getting a door held for you. Maybe they held the door because you look like a nice person – you’ve identified a strength! Count everything! If you feel that you don’t want to give yourself credit for something because it’s too small, or other people had a hand in it – STOP THAT! You make things happen! Refer to bullet 1 – you are the only thing you need to factor in. If good things happen and you’re around to experience it, trust me, you had something to do with it so tally that to you. Get real honest with what you’re good at and be liberal with how you attribute good to yourself. If you feel uncomfortable doing that – good, you only grow when you are uncomfortable.
- Recognize when you feel unconfident. As soon as you recognize it, you can change it. Sit up taller, keep your chin up, boost your voice, pop out your chest, remember all the things you’re good at, and fake it ’til you make it! Sometimes the way to becoming what you want is just deciding it. Tell yourself, “I am confident.” Then act accordingly.
- Develop resilience. Achievement usually comes after lots of hard work and failure, so know that you may have problems and you may fail, but decide to keep going anyway – that’s what a winner does. Once you have that, you’ll have the confidence to know that you can succeed at anything. Why? Because skill is not really what’s required to win – winning takes resilience. If you keep trying, the skill will be honed and one day you’ll win. So, if you don’t quit, you know one day you’ll get what you want, and for that reason, you can be confident that you’ll always win if you keep going.
- Meditate. Sit with yourself and think about what is truly important to you. When you do this, you’ll get closer to identifying what you truly want, then your life will start to go in the right direction. When that happens, you’ll gain natural confidence. The opposite of this would be to think about what other people want or use status symbols to determine your value. It’s important to find the answers in yourself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a Ninja obstacle course athlete and course designer for World Ninja Sport.
My passion – enabling the world to Ninja!
When I started training Ninja, no one really knew what it was. I had to explain it to everyone I met. So, there were no obstacles or Ninja gyms to train in. So I got to work making obstacles! Gradually, word of mouth spread and I built bigger and bigger courses. Today we are a full-service Ninja company that builds ninja gyms around the world.
Ninja training is one of the most fun things to do and it gets you extremely fit! The mental and physical stimulation paired with social gains makes Ninja one of the best sports of all time. So, I love to help people Ninja!
My company, World Ninja Sport, is the premiere provider of quality Ninja obstacles, Ninja gym design services, and Ninja coach certifications. We are entirely run by actual competitors from the show American Ninja Warrior and have decades of experience creating courses as athletes, builders, and coaches.
When a customer reaches out to us, the first question is always, “what is your dream Ninja scenario?” From there, we get to work learning about the current skill levels, equipment, and space to get an idea of how to bridge the gap from current status to dream status! Then we get to work building the most awesome Ninja course possible!
We are really pumped to have a new line of backyard Ninja courses called the Ninja Cube. The Ninja Cube is a freestanding Ninja gym that can be shipped to your house and self-installed! So you can have a Ninja course from us, complete with obstacles, in less than a week! It’s a game changer! More info is at www.worldninjasport.com
We are also gearing up to build several state-of-the-art Ninja gyms around the world. Our VersaRig and Playland Rig are becoming increasingly popular amongst Ninja gyms, day camps, and rock climbing gyms, so we have begun mass production of those rigs while continuing to design custom courses.
Ninja is always evolving and there are infinite obstacle configurations so we are always growing into new areas of design and we’re pumped to talk with new clients about how to enable them to Ninja.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
- Grit! Getting over the hardships and continuing on!
- Problem solving. Entrepreneurs MUST be able to constantly solve new problems because just about every day presents a new challenge.
- A good nature. People view the business world as dog-eat-dog sometimes. I can tell you from my experience – keeping your cool and treating people well is very rewarding.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I’m always interested in pairing up with like-minded individuals. If you have a company or service that can work in conjunction with Ninja training – reach out!
