Meet Louise Royer

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louise Royer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Louise, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

My purpose in my work is to spread joy and convey meaningful messages through engaging content creation, such as social media posts and Extended Reality experiences. My inspiration stems from my frequent travels and the desire to bring smiles to my loved ones across different continents. One recent project I’m proud of is Ocean Run, an Augmented Reality game aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution. This project combines fun gameplay with an important message, inspired by conversations with locals during my travels. Ultimately, my mission revolves around using creativity to promote both happiness and environmental awareness. You can check out Ocean Run here: https://www.instagram.com/ar/917114266219534/

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m an XR UX/UI designer specializing in creating social media filters for platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. What excites me most about my work is the ability to blend virtual and physical worlds, telling engaging stories and bringing joy to people’s lives. My diverse background, rooted in France but enriched by eight years in Hong Kong and a BA in Multimedia Arts and Animation from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, drives me to explore virtual projects that transcend geographical boundaries.

Ranked in the top 1% of Effect Creators on TikTok, with over 14 million views in a month, underscores my dedication and creativity. My motivation stems from a deep-seated desire to connect people through immersive experiences that celebrate cultural diversity. Winning the Meta Sponsored Enhanced Learning with Meta Presence at a MIT hackathon with my team was a proud moment, as it allowed us to showcase our Mixed Reality experience focused on Chinese culture. We’re eager to expand this endeavor to embrace and educate about other cultures, further enriching the XR landscape.

Additionally, I’m currently open to collaborating with others to create new experiences. Whether it’s developing social media filters or crafting immersive XR projects, I’m excited to work together to bring ideas to life. You can reach out to me at [email protected]. Let’s create something amazing together!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One crucial quality is curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning, particularly in the tech field where advancements are constant. Staying updated on new technologies and learning from peers is essential. Events like AWE, CES, and hackathons such as MIT Reality Hack provide excellent learning opportunities. Additionally, engaging with people, especially those more experienced, can be highly beneficial. Confidence is also vital. Overcoming shyness by pushing oneself out of the comfort zone, such as through solo trips, fosters personal growth. I can relate to this personally as I used to be extremely shy. To combat this, I embarked on solo trips, forcing myself to interact with strangers. By confronting fears, individuals can develop confidence, enabling them to make decisions without hesitation and communicate effectively.

Finally, exploring various hobbies and activities is essential. This experimentation allows individuals to discover their passions and broaden their skill sets. Trying new things, like coding, can lead to unexpected interests and a sense of accomplishment. I initially found coding boring and challenging. However, once I gave it a try, I fell in love with it, especially the satisfaction of completing a project.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

I believe it wasn’t just one impactful thing, but rather a culmination of efforts from my parents. My father, with his passion for technology, bought me my first computer when I was seven. He introduced me to video games, the internet, and concepts like Web3, Metaverse, AI, and XR. He stays updated with the latest tech trends.

On the other hand, my mother, being highly creative, nurtured my artistic side through drawing and photography. She encouraged creativity in me and my sisters.

Both my parents love traveling, and I’ve been lucky to explore 30 countries with them, which broadened my perspective on different cultures and their use of design and technology.

My parents are admired for their kindness, patience, and sense of humor, always ready to help others. They inspire me to pursue my career goals and embrace life’s experiences for personal growth.

My parents’ lasting impact on me isn’t about one thing they did, but their ongoing guidance, love, and support that shaped me into who I am. They taught me to value learning, creativity, and compassion.
