Meet Silencia Cox

We were lucky to catch up with Silencia Cox recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Silencia , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Both of my parents are entrepreneurs and own their own businesses. My father owned a construction company that focused on designing and building custom solar homes in Northern Colorado. My mother is the founder and creative force behind Motherlove, the business that I now have the privilege of running. Growing up, I watched both of my parents organize their days and lives around the balance of family and business; they often worked late nights and odd hours to ensure we still had time together as a family. I also noticed at an early age that they were ultimately responsible for their own successes, and those successes were brought about by their sheer determination and work ethic. Watching them taught me so much about not only running a business but balancing my personal life as well. It takes a lot of hard work, but if you set out with a vision and a goal, you can make anything happen.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Silencia Cox, the CEO of Motherlove Herbal Company. More than a generation ago my mother Kathryn Higgins founded Motherlove to help support her own pregnancy and journey into motherhood. From our humble beginnings collecting herbs in the forest, to now manufacturing and distributing herbal personal care to moms everywhere, we have grown but also remain rooted in our commitment to quality. Motherlove continues to provide organic herbal personal care products for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers around the globe and is family-owned and operated in Fort Collins, Colorado and is a Certified B Corporation and Women Owned Enterprise. I have been the CEO of Motherlove for 9 years and enjoy spending time outdoors, rafting, snowboarding, and hiking with my dog.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Determination. I don’t always have all the answers, but I have always been determined to find them. And if I don’t make the right decision, I am determined to learn from my mistakes.
Empathy. Life is complex and doesn’t always fit into working and non-working hours. Employees need flexibility in their personal lives to be their best at work, and at home.

Gratitude. It is not easy and it is not always fun, but I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had and the amazing people I get to work with every day.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Honestly, it is a vast collection of people. I truly value my peer groups and fellow business owners that give me advice, share their hard lessons, and are an honest sounding board when I encounter obstacles or unknown territories. Surrounding myself with smart peers and co-workers has made all the difference in getting through the difficult times.
