Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tina Ngo and Jennie Hyunh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tina and Jennie, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Jennie Hyunh: “Overcoming or avoiding burnout has been a significant part of our journey at Peacock Nails. One memorable strategy? A trip to Hawaii. But, in all seriousness, what truly has made a difference is the strong partnership we’ve built within our team. We’ve fostered a supportive environment where we genuinely look out for each other. When one of us feels overwhelmed or on the brink of burnout, another steps in to oversee the business, allowing the other to take a well-deserved break. This collaborative approach ensures that everyone at Peacock Nails can recharge and return with renewed energy and creativity, maintaining our commitment to excellence and innovation in everything we do.”
“We are also very lucky to have extremely supportive staff members who help take care and nurture Peacock Nails as if it is their own child. Our staff members are a crucial part of our business and they know when we’re tired, overwhelmed, or burnt out, they will help wherever they can even if it means opening and closing the store for us.”
Tina Ngo: “To overcome or avoid burnout, I found an unexpected solution: a trip back to Vietnam. However, the real key to navigating burnout extends beyond just taking vacations. At Peacock Nails, we’re incredibly fortunate to have an exceptionally supportive team. Our staff members are not just employees; they’re the heart and soul of our salon, treating Peacock Nails with the same care and dedication as if it were their own. They play a pivotal role in our operations and our ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance.”
“Our team’s support has been indispensable. They’re keenly attuned to when we, as leaders, start to feel the weight of exhaustion, overwhelm, or burnout. In those moments, they step up in remarkable ways, from managing the day-to-day operations to opening and closing the store without being asked. This collective sense of responsibility and mutual support ensures that everyone at Peacock Nails can take the time they need to recharge, ensuring we all return to our roles with renewed energy and passion. This synergy not only helps us avoid burnout but also strengthens our bond as a team, making our business stronger and more resilient.”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Tina Ngo: “As co-owner of Peacock Nails, I’m passionate about our salon’s holistic approach to beauty, encompassing hair, nail, facial, and lash services at our newly updated location. The expansion of our offerings excites me the most, as it allows us to provide a comprehensive beauty experience. We pride ourselves on blending high-quality care with a touch of cultural appreciation, creating a unique environment for our clients. Our grand opening showcased this blend, celebrating our community and the special bond we share. At Peacock Nails, we’re dedicated to offering an exceptional experience, ensuring every visit leaves you feeling rejuvenated and beautiful. We invite you to join us and experience the difference our dedication to quality, innovation, and community makes.”
Jennie Hyunh: “As co-owner of Peacock Nails, my enthusiasm for our salon lies in our specialized offerings, particularly in nails and HydraFacials. This unique combination captures the essence of our commitment to providing comprehensive beauty care. What’s truly exhilarating about our salon is the way we’ve managed to integrate advanced skincare treatments like HydraFacials with our expert nail services. This approach allows us to offer our clients a holistic beauty experience that not only enhances their appearance but also promotes skin health. Our HydraFacials are a testament to our dedication to innovative skin care, providing deep hydration and rejuvenation that complements the artistic craftsmanship of our nail services. At Peacock Nails, we strive to create a space where beauty and wellness converge, offering personalized treatments that cater to each client’s unique needs. Our goal is to ensure every client leaves our salon feeling pampered, refreshed, and satisfied with their experience.”
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Tina Ngo: 1. Prioritizing our team and its well-being so that their happiness within our company is shown through their work, which follows through with us having happy customers.
2. You can’t make everyone happy, and when you have difficult clients, you take it with a grain of salt and remember to let it go before coming home – that’s helped build a boundary for work and for personal life
3. Embracing change as you get older. You need to trust the young ones in the team to let the business grow. You can provide input and guidance, but you must be one to support them so they can keep you and the business with the times.
Jennie Hyunh:
1. Being open to learning from others regardless if they are in your field or not. If it wasn’t for us working with our marketing team, I wouldn’t understand why we specifically post certain pictures or videos, or why they choose to not post a photo or not.
2. Be grateful for the challenging art/design requests that come your way. With open transparency, you can tell a client if it’s within your scope of work or if they’re willing to let you try to do the art piece since it’s not your specialty. It challenges you as a technician to be better at your skills, practice craftsmanship, and stay ahead with the trends.
3. It takes money to make money. You have to invest and understand the long-term investment of it will have a better return. We cannot have the expectation that everything will have a right-now, or super quick return. If you want things done right and efficiently, it takes time and patience.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Tina Ngo: My advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed or stressed is to take a moment for yourself. Step outside for a quick break, take a deep breath, and then come back in to continue with your day until it concludes. After the day ends, I make it a point to write down or discuss with my team what we could do better in the future. Together, we look for ways to implement those changes before similar situations reoccur. This approach not only helps manage stress in the moment but also contributes to continuous improvement and resilience in our work environment.
Jennie Hyunh: My advice for managing stress is rooted in the power of transparency and honesty, underscored by open communication for effective results. If you’re able to communicate and engage in conversations where you can identify areas of agreement or disagreement, you’ll discover, over time, there’s a wealth of learning opportunities. Through this process, it’s often possible to find a mutual agreement or middle-ground that all parties can accept. This approach not only alleviates stress but also fosters a culture of understanding and collaboration.
