Meet Nicole Detling

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Detling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.

Hi Nicole, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I have failed so many times in my life – and I have learned from each one of those failures. That has also led me to spend some time researching resilience to better understand how to build it. Through all these experiences, I am currently working on a book about resilience. I also teach courses on resiliency for federal government leaders. So this topic is near and dear to my heart. We will all go through difficulties and struggles in life. That part is unavoidable and out of our control. But what we CAN do is learn and grow from these struggles as well as help others out along the way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I do what I do so that I can help as many people as people figure out how to “do life better”. Whether that’s an athlete focusing on performing at their best, a business professional wanting to improve their culture, a leader who would like to inspire their followers, or a sales professional looking to master their pitch. Across the board, I love helping people achieve their dreams. That’s what drives me to do what I do every day. The opportunity to impact people is a blessing that I am grateful for every day.

Our company focuses on optimizing mental health by building a fence at the top of the cliff rather than just placing an ambulance down in the valley. We believe that teaching people mental skills that build their resilience, grit, determination, passion, etc. will ultimately improve their well-being.

We have expanded our offices and provide in-person appointments in Utah, California, Minnesota, and New Zealand. Through virtual technology, we can meet you wherever you are in the world. We are also looking forward to offering new, specialized, virtual courses in 2024.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Specialized education in mental performance was the biggest factor for me at the beginning. I also used myself as a guinea pig for a lot of techniques as I wanted to know what the skills actually felt like and how they could be implemented, Overtime, and indirect benefit of this became that I was able to handle my personal struggles and difficulties better. And the third would be that I always have a “white-belt” mentality. No matter how much I learn, I will always continue to seek knowledge. This allows me a larger database to pull from when helping and guiding others.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I believe this is an important question as no one is immune to feeling this way. I have two strategies that may help you when you get here. The first one is practicing self-compassion. This is NOT the same as self-care. Self-compassion is about recognizing that YOU are also part of common humanity and thus, treating yourself the same way you would treat someone you care for very much. Give yourself the same space and grace to experience your life as you would give someone else. The second strategy for in those big moments of overwhelm: just make the next decision. What’s the one thing you can do right now to help you move from where you are to where you want to be? One step in the right direction can bring momentum for you to work yourself out of and away from the overwhelm.
