Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katharina Baron. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katharina , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I think creativity comes from curiosity and a constant state of exploration. You have to be in the flow with life as life itself is a creation and then you can just be in a state of wonder. I always used to say either it’s a great day or a great story. Sometimes when something annoying happens I try to write the beginning of a story in my head about it. I just love imagination and images. I think in images and I think they help me create the final vision of what I want to do. It’s an art to make life more beautiful than it is and to try to find purpose in it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a director and producer I have worked on commercials and content for brands like Mercedes-Benz, Vogue and Swarovski. I am currently repped by Havoc Content as a director where I also do creative development. I think the time in front of the camera is very essential for a good director. I was acting in a few TV shows and films and I got to play with talents like Marlon Wayans. Most recently I wrote a novel and I am super excited it will get published this summer with DCV Books.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think my best quality is to just follow my instincts. I do what I love and I go where I want to go. It’s this quest for freedom of self-expression and adventure. I don’t think this is the typical advice for anyone looking for a structured career. But I always followed my heart and remained myself. I don’t think there is a short cut and I don’t believe in following a path anyone else has already taken.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I think the biggest challenge is to be free of the opinion of others. It is the hardest part because we naturally want to fit in. But if we are different than our surroundings and if we want to venture out and do something no one else is doing, we have to have that inner strength and faith in ourself. When I wrote my novel only my sister and my publisher got to read it. I didn’t want any feedback from friends or colleagues. I was confident in my own voice and it took me many years to be at that point where I can trust myself. I honestly think it takes time and many failed efforts to really get to that authentic part in yourself.
