Meet Liz Dyer

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Dyer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Liz with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My parents – they raised me to give my all to whatever I did and to keep my commitments.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the founder of Real Mama Bears, an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering famlies with LGBTQ+ members and the LGBTQ+ community. I started a private Facebook group in 2014 for moms of LGBTQ+ kids. I have a son who is gay and I wanted to create a space where moms of LGBTQ+ kids could connect with one another, find support and share resources. In 2014 there were about 150 moms in the group and today we have more than 40,000 moms in that group. That one group evolved into a whole organization. Today we have 8 more private groups, we have more than 60 Mama Bear chapters and we host a variety of programs that serve the LGBTQ+ community.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey include:

I was well informed as I spent several years taking time to connect with those I wanted to serve so I could understand their needs and priorities.

I was (and still am) passionate about what I was pursuing.

I’m a well organized person.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love to connect with families with LGBTQ+ members. I am passionate about doing what I can to make the world a kinder, safer, more inclusive place for LGBTQ+ people to live and thrive. The more families that join that work the more positive change we will see. I truly believe “as the family goes, so goes the world.”
