We were lucky to catch up with Toumia Baynham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Toumia, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self discipline comes from wanting to see a better version of myself as a business owner and also breaking generational curses. Without self discipline you don’t see much progress in any goals that you may set aside for yourself or for your business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Toumia , I was born and raised here in Nashville,Tennessee. I’m an esthetician and also a master barber. The name of my business is TB Experience , which stands for Total Beauty. I offer services anywhere from facials, brow waxes, tint, lash extensions, as well as haircuts and loc services. I cater to both men and women, and my mission is to boost the confidence of anyone that accompanies me in my chair. The most exciting thing about my career is the satisfying smiles that my clients walk away with once I transform them in my chair. I also love the different conversations and people I have met from all over the world being in the beauty industry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance, consistency, and constantly wanting to learn to expand my skill set. My advice to anyone wanting to be an entrepreneur is to put your all into your craft. The more you perfect your service the bigger your clientele you will touch. Practicing your skill set will help with your scheduling because you will be able to make more money in a short amount of time. Also I’m always willing to invent into courses that will expand my skill set.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I make sure that I take self care days so that I have days that are just for me. This industry can be hard on your body so you have to make sure that you’re taking proper care of yourself.
