Meet Albert DuPont

We recently connected with Albert DuPont and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Albert, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I’ve always felt like I knew my purpose, but for the longest time, I was scared—scared of embracing it, scared of what it meant to truly live it out. You see, my story begins in the deep south of Louisiana, a place steeped in traditions, where I grew up gay in an environment that didn’t always understand or accept who I was. As a kid, it felt like I was living in a constant state of hiding, not from others but from myself. I wasn’t ready to acknowledge my full self, afraid of the consequences that might come with it.

It was a journey, a long one at that, which taught me the importance of being my authentic self. The older I got, the more I realized the power of shedding the shame and fears that life had imposed on me. Coming out as a gay, cisgender male was a pivotal moment in my life—it was more than just an announcement; it was an assertion of my identity, a claim to my space in the world.

This process of coming out, however, was intertwined with the fear of losing everything—jobs, insurance, basic rights—simply because of who I am. It was a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that come with being a part of the LGBTQ+ community. But it also ignited a purpose within me, a purpose that was further shaped by my 35-year career in education. I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of providing resources to those who’ve been deemed unworthy or incapable. It’s not about a lack of potential but a lack of resources.

As I ventured through the realms of teaching, administration, and educational leadership, I saw the impact of resources on excellence. It became clear that access to resources could dramatically change lives, especially for marginalized communities. This realization hit closer to home as I aged, particularly now in my fifties. I began to reflect on my legacy and the impact I wanted to have, especially on the LGBTQ+ community.

I noticed a recurring theme in my observations and experiences: marginalized communities often face significant barriers to accessing resources, not because they aren’t available but because these communities don’t always feel safe seeking them out through traditional means. This insight shaped my purpose and the direction of my work. I believe everyone deserves access to the resources they need to thrive, to fulfill their potential, and to contribute to the greater good, regardless of their identity.

Now, at this point in my career and life, I’m focused on building my legacy, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. My business is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses, business owners, and organizations that support our community have the support they need to flourish. By leveraging my business acumen, educational background, and understanding of human behavior and development, I aim to connect people, create safe spaces, and foster a sense of community where everyone can thrive.

It’s about more than just survival; it’s about prosperity, about building a world where we can all come together, learn from each other, and support one another, irrespective of how we identify. This journey has taught me the value of authenticity, the power of resources, and the importance of legacy. My purpose is to empower my community to thrive, not just survive, and to ensure that the greatness within each of us is recognized and nurtured.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m reminded of the journey that’s led me to where I am today. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, it’s clear that certain qualities and skills have been instrumental in shaping my path and success. If I had to distill it all down, three core elements stand out: a hands-on approach, deep listening coupled with curiosity, and the ability to navigate complexity through systemic thinking. These aren’t just skills; they’ve been my north stars, guiding every step of my professional adventure.

Firstly, the ‘roll-up-your-sleeves’ attitude has been fundamental. I dive deep into work alongside my clients, immersing myself in their challenges and triumphs. This hands-on approach isn’t just about showing commitment; it’s about truly understanding the nuances of each situation, which in turn guides the strategic advice and solutions I offer. For those just starting, my advice is to embrace every opportunity to get your hands dirty. There’s no substitute for firsthand experience, and it’s often in the trenches where you’ll learn the most.

Listening deeply and fostering an insatiable curiosity have been equally crucial. Being a good listener isn’t just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the emotions, the unspoken concerns, and aspirations behind them. Coupled with curiosity, this skill has enabled me to explore various perspectives and dig deeper into the root causes of challenges. To develop this, practice active listening in every conversation, and let your curiosity lead you to ask questions, even those that seem offbeat at the moment. It’s amazing what you can uncover when you truly listen and seek to understand beyond the surface.

Lastly, the ability to analyze complexities and think systemically has set me apart. The world is interconnected, and problems are rarely isolated. Understanding how different elements within a system interact has allowed me to identify solutions that are both innovative and effective. This skill in navigating dynamic, complex environments isn’t innate; it’s honed over time through exposure to diverse challenges and the relentless pursuit of understanding how things are interconnected. To anyone looking to develop this ability, I recommend studying systems thinking and seeking out varied experiences that challenge your conventional ways of problem-solving.

In addition to these, underlying qualities like being a relentless problem solver, continuously checking in, and using questioning to explore the unknown have been pivotal. We often uncover the most about ourselves and our capacities in the face of the unknown. Embrace it.

Building a strong network has also been invaluable, not just for the opportunities it’s opened but for the diverse perspectives and support it has provided. Networking isn’t just about collecting contacts; it’s about building genuine relationships and learning from others. Be genuinely interested in people, and you’ll find that this curiosity leads to connections that are both meaningful and mutually beneficial.

In essence, my journey has been about blending these skills and qualities to navigate the complexities of the business world. For those at the beginning of their path, remember that these skills are developed through practice, exposure, and a willingness to learn continuously. Embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow, and never underestimate the power of listening, curiosity, and systemic thinking in unlocking the doors to success.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, I’m always on the lookout for folks to partner or collaborate with, especially those who share a vision for making a significant impact in the business world. The statistics are sobering—with a high percentage of new businesses not making it past the critical first few years, it’s clear that the road to success is fraught with challenges. Key among these challenges are insufficient capital, poor management, ineffective business planning, marketing mishaps, and a failure to adapt to market changes. It’s a tough landscape out there, and the odds are stacked against us in a way that demands not just attention but action.

Given this backdrop, I’m particularly keen to connect with individuals who are navigating the intricate dynamics of starting or growing their business, especially within the LGBTQ+ entrepreneur community. The folks I’m looking to collaborate with are those who are deeply embedded in the Professional Services industry, with businesses that are experiencing growth, ideally with a revenue between $1-5M, and a team size around 5-10 employees.

Your ambitions might include scaling your business beyond its current boundaries, and your personality likely aligns with being proactive, innovative, and resilient. Given the specific challenges and opportunities faced by LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, there’s a wealth of potential for collaboration that can lead to mutual growth, learning, and success.

If you’re reading this and see your own aspirations reflected in these words, I would love to hear from you. Whether you’re based in the US, particularly in regions like DC or Louisiana, or anywhere with a vision that aligns with mine, there’s a conversation to be had about how we can support each other’s journeys. The goal is to build strong management foundations, develop effective business plans, and navigate the complexities of market demands together.

Connecting with me is straightforward—I’m looking for those ready to roll up their sleeves and dive deep into the work that needs to be done. If you’re an owner, founder, or CEO of a business that’s focused on growth beyond just a lifestyle venture, and especially if you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, let’s explore how we can collaborate. Together, we can tackle the challenges head-on, leveraging our unique strengths to not just survive but thrive in the competitive business landscape. Reach out, and let’s start a conversation about building something meaningful and enduring.
