We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Markin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.

Hi Brittany, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Self care is so important, big believer in if you feel good you look good, And this applies to your skin as well. Healthy living plays a huge role in how our skin looks and how we feel. Taking the time to listen to your body and learning what it needs to nourish. Self care personally took me some time to really learn how to do that for myself. It’s so easy to take care of others when it’s your job to make others feel and look beautiful. It can be draining. It wasn’t till covid happened that I was able to recenter and refocus what I needed to feel good, for me. I finally felt like myself again, working out daily, eating good, and finding time for myself. Fast forward to current life we are all back at it again and I am guilty of losing that rhythm. But I had to sit and remember the things that made me feel good. I can’t stress enough making time for yourself whether it’s in the morning or at night , make a routine, Have that quiet time in the morning/night. Sit outside (if possible) listen to the birds and observe the neighbors. Laugh at the dogs that walk by. Living your life and seeing the beauty of it all. Finding the simplicity and the brightness for me is the self care routine I need in order to maintain for me to be on it for my clients. If I am not feeling good I can’t help my clients feel good.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an esthetician that has been servicing the Jupiter, FL area for over 15 years. Specializing in full body waxing for most of that time, I was reminded of joy in skin care over 5 years ago when I took a Sculptural Face Lifting class from Yakov Gershkovich, I was able to regain the love and turn my focus to natural facial rejuvenation. I love being able to connect with my clients and help them reach their skin goals or just being a safe space for them to just relax. The most exciting part about what I do, honestly has to be the fact that I have created a one on one experience in a small intimate space. And being able to watch my clients skin journey. This makes it unique and gets me excited about how I can expand in some way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My mentor, Denise Fuller, and long time previous boss, Kelly Cattau, has been such an important part of my journey. Denise started as my esthetic instructor and she taught the importance of connecting with your client. Taking that extra step before starting a treatment really goes a long way. If you’re able to connect with your client physically, energetically, emotionally, how that affects a treatment , is DEEP. And Kelly has impacted my journey in so many ways as a business owner. Working with each other for 10 years you learn a lot in general, whether that’s business related, personal, or working with co-workers. But being able to overcome business challenges and successes alongside someone was so important to who I am today as a business woman myself. She taught me how to edit myself. That bounce back and forth, and being able to show care in everything you do. And finally, my Mom, the queen. Growing up my mom was a BOSS A** B! She carried herself strong, poised, and full of grace. She taught this at a young age. One thing that has always stuck out to me is how she dressed for work. Always put together, this has been a part of me. When you show up looking on top you work on top. Slap that lipstick on, and let’s go. My advice is listen to your elders but listen to yourself and make it your own. There is so much to be proud of and focusing on the overall picture helps create who you are.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
If I ever feel overwhelmed with a situation, if it’s on the spot or something I need to think about to move forward. I have always taken a step back to breath and reassess, or if it’s something bigger and really needs some time. I find talking it out with someone you trust always helps me. I always like to say “I’m a marinater”, I like to take my time and think and talk it out before making my next move.
