Meet Kristin Hulda

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristin Hulda. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kristin, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I am most effective when I am operating from a place of calm, where I feel grounded to myself, my surroundings, my people and my vision. To achieve this state of flow I have to take care of my physical needs so I exercise at least twice a week. This in turn lifts my mood and keeps me motivated so mentally I feel strong and can continue to give of myself, to create. When I need to recharge my social batteries and reconnect with myself I watch movies or series. I fully immerse myself in another world and find it to be a subconscious exploration in other opportunities and outcomes. For longer breakaways I need to go deep into the outdoors, where there are no distractions and life is simplified. Usually I walk away with an immense sense of gratitude for my life, one I have worked hard to build.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am proud of the fact that I get to wake up everyday and ‘make cool shit’. This can be a pattern design, an artwork, a client proposal document, a photograph, a feature tile wall or a full interior fit out. To simply create, and create beauty, is so deeply ingrained in me I cannot imagine life without it.

I’ve combined my artistic and interior interests and created a contemporary, afro-modern style wallpaper and fabric design collection in collaboration with Fabric Bank. Aptly named the KH Collection it is a blend of wild brushstrokes and clean shapes. It seeks to explore a new African aesthetic, to celebrate the future of the continent and create modern traditions.

Kristin Hulda is about more than a product or outcome, I aim to make every touch point with my brand a pleasant experience. Being kind is free. It is important to me to feel that I am making someone smile, making them feel seen and appreciated, that they know our interaction was a collaboration instead of a sale.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most valuable lesson I have learned is that my health and wellbeing are the biggest influencing factors in my success. I touched on it earlier but I cannot emphasize enough the major impact that understanding my own personal, intricate needs as a creative soul has had on the quality of my life.

Secondly, it’s ok to not know. Don’t be afraid of the unknown. You can approach it with care, caution and curiosity but not fear. As a creative, we are made to expand the understanding of humankind through art and design. We bridge the gap between order and chaos. Never lose sight of how powerful this skill is. What feels natural to you is foreign to someone else. Hold fast in your vision of what life can be.

Lastly, engage and cultivate relationships with people. As a tool for collaboration, as a resource for your career or business and to enrich your own experience in this wonderful thing called life. You will meet so many different kinds of people, seek to open your mind to what you can learn from every interaction. Be humbled by others and recognise their strengths. Social skills can be learned, it just takes practise.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Next for Kristin Hulda will be to take my design concepts further into the world of textiles, surfaces and homewares. I’d love to engage with craftspeople who weave, or throw ceramics, pour candles, sew couture or carve wood. I’m open to the conversations, the collaborations, the sharing of ideas and the new relationships.

In modern times, building a strong brand is as much about association as it is about delivering a great product with exceptional service. I strive to always be authentic, open, curious about life and intentional about business.

Find me on Instagram, or send me a simple email to start a conversation. My links are all below. I can’t wait to hear about your vision and help us both grow.
