We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joe Fingerhut. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joe below.
Hi Joe, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I gradually increased the discomfort factor with life choices. Step by step, I stretched the rubber band of my known environment, and expanded my experiences and skills. Exercised my message of the “HOW CAN I?” mindset.
–Never been out of the country; joined a service trip to Guatemala, then did a solo backbacking trip through Europe.
–Never been to Asia; applied to be an English Teacher in Japan, lived there for 3 years and traveled ALL OVER Asia
–Wanted to have a career ‘in front of people;’ approached my wedding DJ after my reception to train me and became an award-winning DJ. Answered a job ad for ‘Magic Instructor,’ became an award-winning entertainer.
–wanted to build a career as a professional speaker; started networking with speakers and connections to find opportunities, built a web site, built a business, and became an award-winning speaker.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am living my dream as a professional speaker. I travel all over the country and world inspiring people and organizations to unlock potential and possibility with the simple growth mindset question: “HOW CAN I?”
I love sharing my stories of transforming ordinary into extraordinary, from a seemingly ordinary upbringing in the Midwest to exploring over 30 countries on 6 continents.
I traveled for several years after college, then pursued a career in entertainment, and won awards as a DJ and Entertainer as a Magician, Juggler, Unicyclist, and Hypnotist.
I bring all my stage skills and stories together as a professional speaker, and the energy I bring to kick off events is contagious!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Don’t worry about failing. Every fail is an opportunity to learn.
2. Usually the biggest obstacle holding you back is your own mindset, i.e. self-limiting beliefs.
3. People in your life believe in you, and want to help you, but you have to get clear on what you want and TELL EVERYONE.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
1. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho Best Quote: “When you decide you want something, the universe conspires in your favor.” I re-read this and recommend it often. It speaks to the destiny of your personal journey, and the power of self-belief.
2. How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie
Incredible and Evergreen Lessons in people skills. I re-read this and recommend it all the time.
–the most beautiful sound in the world is someone’s own name.
–Focus on other people, give compliments, be curious
