Meet Joshua Clark

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joshua Clark a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I never sought out the film world in a way it sought me out. I don’t mean that in with any hubris inserted. I studied business at school and then got into engineering. So i was very far away from becoming a filmmaker for the first 15 years of my professional career. However a pretty rough divorce led me to finally embrace some truths about myself and I went and got mental health help for the first time in my life. Through that process of healing I started to seek out my alignment. I decided to make a short documentary about the generational trauma in my family and how we have used motorcycle riding as a coping mechanism for years. That helped heal many members of my family by finally telling some hard truths about us all. Once I had that feeling of universal alignment inside my soul I knew that I had to continue down this path. Now 5 years later I am a full time filmmaker and producer having produced or directed 8 films so far.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Right now I am gearing up to direct a four part docuseries around a prison arts program here in Ohio. It’s on brand for our company as we love to showcase healing and alignment within our society.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, adaptability, and mental fortitude. I believe if you want to be successful in anything you will fail a lot. And those failures will be taxing but they are become so fantastic once you embrace them as learning endeavors and course corrections. I don’t think there is any way to get where you ultimately want to be and are meant to be without proving to the universe that every fiber of your being cannot be any place else than the course you are on.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
A book that will always ring true with me is the Kybalion. It speaks the language of universal truths but it is not for the faint of heart. More recently I read Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act”. His insights into the artist mind are fascinating and inspiring.
