We were lucky to catch up with Jodi Mason recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jodi , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcome it by understanding that people are listening to me for something different. I have listened to other podcast for ideas on how to edit my style or flow but I cannot turn into them or people would just go listen to whomever I listen to instead of listening me. I do things different from the podcast I listen to so that I do stick out from everyone else. I have a weekly Florida Man story to remind people that while Florida is beautiful and fun…. It’s still wild and crazy most days.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a podcast host of about two years now, for That Florida Feeling, and it still feels like I am new to this even after 2. years. I started the podcast during the middle of the pandemic because I didn’t have any summer work, and I was bored. I wanted a new project and decided that a podcast would be fun. I live in Florida and it’s such a diverse state that I had my topic all around me. I had plenty of people to interview, topics to research, and things to discover about the state I live in.
I absolutely love doing the podcast. I have met so many amazing people, other podcast host, and even some celebrities through the podcast. I was able to help people get information during Ian which was a necessity because of all the chaos going on. I am happy to tell people about the state I love to call home. I am sure that I have much to learn and can always improve myself and my podcast, but that’s part of the fun journey. I love doing my weekly polls to learn about my readers and seeing what they love about Florida as well.
I am mainly focused on continuing the podcast and making That Florida Feeling its own brand. I want it to be the go to podcast for all things Florida. I am currently working on merchandise for the podcast, and can’t wait to get that out to my listeners.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination is one huge quality that I needed to start and maintain the podcast. I honestly wasn’t sure what topic to even start with, but then I just did it. I was determined to do it so I did it. I am also determined to keep doing it through the long weeks a work, whatever is going on in life, and other things this is my passion now. Confidence is another quality I needed to start and maintain the podcast. I had to have confidence in myself and that I would succeed. I can say that since starting this project I have gained more confidence in myself and my podcast. I kept going and here I am today, 2 years later… still doing it.
Writing has definitely been a skill I have needed for the podcast. I have the idea but then I have to make the idea sound good so being able to write out the thoughts and facts to be able to share it with listeners has been an important skill for me.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents are the ones who instilled confidence in me. They helped me understand that I can do anything I put my mind to. They also helped me to understand that just because you tried and it didn’t work out that doesn’t mean it was failure. I can say that I tried it, and it wasn’t for me, but that I tried. I am grateful that they allowed me to try many different things in life and helped me pursue my education to get where I am today.
