We were lucky to catch up with Jillian O’Neill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jillian , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Although this may sound counterintuitive, asking questions helps overcome imposter syndrome. The more you inquire, the more you realize rarely do people have a quick answer, and if they do, they are so often willing to share. So it’s a win-win!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a 20 year veteran of the interior design industry, most recently switching from interiors to product design. However in 2023, my friend, Susan Ferrier, and I launched Design Retreat. It is a 3 day intensive occurring in Atlanta this spring. We, along with our superstar speakers, are determined to offer exclusive access to design knowledge that is all too often inaccessible to homeowners. It’s truly a first of its kind event!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Not being afraid to experiment, and potentially fail. Helping others and being open to collaboration.
Hard work and, more than that, perserverance.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Miracle Morning, by Hal Elrod, I consistently name as a book that changed my life. We all get wrapped up in daily responsibility, from sun up to sun down. And this book was the first time I began taking an hour for myself each day to dream and envision the direction I wanted my life to take, personally and professionally.
