Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to David Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
David, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Starting off in my field, the sense of having to prove yourself was overwhelming. The truth is that there is a bit of imposter syndrome perhaps in any entrepreneur and I am no different.. The world is changing so rapidly that there is always something new to learn in my field. However, the solution for me has become to work my way through my insecurities. The more I write content, build, and produce for my business the more knowledgeable I become. I’ve had to fall in love with the process of discovering what I do not know, and enjoy learning from there. The more I produce the more I get to see how my work is impacting people for the better which becomes the fuel to keep me going.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a sports recruiting coach and the founder of Scholar Champion Athlete (SCA) Recruiting. I work directly with students and families 1 on 1 to support them through the challenging journey of finding the right college sports program. Personalized help is hard to find in today’s world, and even harder to find it with integrity. By working with people online, I can empower them to find what is right from them and help solve the biggest problems that hold them back on their journey. I am most proud to be a service with integrity that exists for anyone who is serious about getting results, offering a money-back guarantee for those who work with me through the entire program.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The skills I have found invaluable are web design, video editing, and content writing. The ability to drive all three processes myself allow me to pivot my business and implement new ideas seamlessly. It is possible to run a business while hiring out in those phases but it severely slows down your growth curve. I have had the freedom to make mistakes, while experimenting with how to communicate my message best with customers. Which is only true because I have the power to not only assess if things are working, but fix them swiftly. Tope Awotona said that any great entrepreneur has to become a generalist and I second that!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My wife is by far the most important person in helping me overcome challenges in my business’s development. As a single member LLC the road to success is incredibly lonely. My wife is the only person who sees the amount of sacrifice required for me to make meaningful progress and roots me on as I do. Through all of the late nights, overnighters, client meetings and more she is consistently in my corner, supporting me in whatever ways are necessary. But more importantly she represents what every entrepreneur needs to have success in the early stages. Someone who can be a sounding board for you to process through your uncertainty as you find solutions to the infinite number of problems that will arise. From there I find the strength to learn a new skill, dive into my analytics, and simply become better so the business can thrive. It is my responsibility to lead the business forward, but the mental and emotional load that comes with it, is incredibly hard for one person to bare. With my wife’s help I don’t have to carry it alone.
