Meet Ugo Agoruah

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ugo Agoruah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Ugo, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

There I am.. sitting in from of a blank canvas… staring deep into a white abyss. Seconds turn into minutes and before I know it, half an hour has past with seemingly no progress. I tell my hand to move but anxiety keeps me arrested. What is it that has this hold on me?? After coming to this battlefield time and time again, I’ve come to the realization that I’ve come with too much baggage. Heavy expectation that keep me from moving forward… it’s a lot easier when you take off the weights.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an Igbo (Nigerian) -American multidisciplinary artist exploring the interconnectedness of self and the collective conscious through lines. Tapping into the foremost act of consciousness, intuition, I tap into my flow state to weave a world in which we can wander into epiphanies on the multidimensional nature of the human condition. The worlds I create encourage a sense of communion, self acceptance, and unraveling.

It’s within this world that I have recently opened up my solo exhibition, “The Good, The True, & The Beautiful: prelude”
This prelude is the birthing of a virtuous world of art and poetic narrative that is meant to join hearts and stir the soul. It is an epic journey of love, trials, discovery, & grace. I invite you all to take this journey with me @ Brooklyn Tea, 329 Nelson St. Atlanta, GA, from February 24th, 2024 – April 1st, 2024.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I look back in my missteps, the times I’ve fallen short, I see lessons I’ve learned. Some harder than others. I see opportunities to turn possible disaster as a chance to overcome. Perspective is key. Along with perspective, consistency, and community have been the bridges that have kept me above water in my journey. Show up for not just you, but the you of the future and those that will depend on you. Don’t allow pride to keep you from reaching out your hand to accept help or even ask for it either.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Rumi poetry has been my one of my biggest companions in this stretch of my journey. His mystic poetry touches a place in my heart that longs for unfolding truths and glimpses of the sublime. Within it, I feel I am in the presence of a beloved friend whom I want to be closer and closer to. Within it, I feel a constant shedding of self.
