Meet Lupita Reyes

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lupita Reyes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lupita below.

Hi Lupita , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I definitely get my work ethic and resilience from my parents. My mom had a difficult childhood and had to become a mom to my aunts at a young age. She never gave up she raised my aunts into hardworking and amazing women. She did the same with my siblings and I. Many people have different opinions about stay at home moms, my opinion is that stay at home moms are super heroes. They literally do everything for others all while attempting to do everything to keep themselves together too. She taught me to work hard and never give up. My dad also had a difficult childhood and I admire him so much. I love to listen to his stories about his childhood in Mexico and all the different jobs he had. He was constantly finding ways to keep working and being the best employee he could be. He worked hard to raise my siblings and I. He worked hard so my mom didn’t have to. He continues to work hard to this day. Theres a quote in Spanish that he always tells me and I don’t think he realizes how much those two words mean to me and how much he inspires me to continue to be a hard worker.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My baking story begins when I was just a child and loved to make brownies from the box mix. They were not always the greatest but my family would always encourage me to continue baking and trying until I perfected them. Since then I have continued to bake and decorate cakes. I originally wanted to focus on different types of sweets and pastries but somehow a shift happened and people love my cakes so much so that is what I mainly do now. I decorate different types of cakes from 1/2 birthdays to anniversaries to just because cakes and anything in between. What’s most exciting about what I do is knowing that I get to make people’s days with a cake. Something new that is coming to my business is that I am going to be coming up with new recipes to have some more variety in the sweets that I offer.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination. Communication. Creativity. Without determination I would not have been able to succeed. I was always determined to perfect my recipes, my decorating skills, my communications skills, everything. Communication is a big one that I originally struggled with. I was so in my shell and too shy and nervous to be able to communicate with others about my business. I was always mortified to embarrass myself or for people to reject my work. But now Im able to communicate better with my customers and even strangers about my business. My advice to those who are on their journey to get out of their shell is to take baby steps. It’s not something that will completely change from one day to another. Start with body language, posture makes a difference in how you carry yourself and people will notice that. Also practice speaking with confidence instead of doubt. And lastly accept rejection and learn from it instead of fearing it.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I often feel overwhelmed because I tend to put too much on my plate. I’ll end up juggling too much at a time and then things don’t get don’t to their fullest potential. I have now learned to better organize my time and most importantly say no when needed. When I do feel overwhelmed I journal my thoughts and write out everything to be better organized, even if I already have it in my calendar. I also make sure to make time alone time for myself, my favorite thing lately has been to try a new coffee shop and read a book to get lost in another world that isn’t my own.
